The Shakespeare Arch Trail is a half-mile trail to a small natural arch of deep red rock. It can be combined with the one mile Sentinel Trail which brings you up over the rock formation in which the arch is situated and gives you nice views over the surprisingly treed valley. It's a fun trail with interesting terrain.

    nice empty trails

The Panorama Trail is the longest in the park with quite a few spur trails. Depending on how many of these spurs you hike, it can be up to five miles round trip. It can take up to three hours if you do them all and linger a bit but there are some nice viewpoints and up close looks at spires and other rock formations.

The Angel's Palace Trail is short but very sweet. In fact, if you can only do one hike in the park, this is likely it. This one-mile round trip hike follows a short canyon before rising up on top of a sandstone formation plateau. From there, you have great views over the valley with the primary spires of the park on prominent display.

Yucca in bloom at Kodachrome Basin State Park

The Grand Parade Trail runs a level one and a half miles and takes in a couple of interesting box canyons. There are good views of the main spires of the park and the canyons provide quite a bit of privacy though in one case it was not quite as much as we originally thought we had.

Chimney Rock in Kodachrome Basin State Park

Chimney Rock is a tall rock formation known as a sand pipe. It was formed when a geyser eventually shut down and its channel solidified due to the minerals in its waters. After thousands of years of erosion eroded the soils around the geyser, the resulting sand pipe was exposed.

    Watch Shooting Stars

The night sky is the night life here. Sit on top of a rock cliff or recline in a blanket. Start counting those shooting stars! August is a great month for this, but we were very happy in May ( and not so hot!) with the many stars we saw. Ever if they stand still, it is the best star show I've ever seen! So many, I couldn't imagine more stars than this!

    Eagle's View Trail

    Kodachrome Basin State Park

Even if you don't trek all the way up this steep and grueling climb, try to at least do part of the trail. It will make your quads burn with its 40% grade and, if you fear heights, the narrow trail will give you some breathless moments, but the birds eye views of the park are worth the minimal discomfort.

Eagle's View trail is located at the end of the park road. A sign marks the trailhead and warns hikers of the conditions.

    Kodachrome Basin State Park

Kodachrome's scenery is as breathtaking as it is unique. A short paved road loops through the main section of the park, passing often colorful, sometimes unusual and frequently stunning rock formations. It is well worth the drive out here, even just to tour this road.

Panorama Point is one of the prettiest spots in the park. The trail leading to Panorama Point is flat and level and is an easy walk that passes some interesting scenery, including the Fred Flintstone Rock and an ancient Indian Cave.

    something for everyone

There is also a short ½ mile paved nature trail that walks you by some nice rock formations and provides benches for quiet contemplation. The self-guided pamphlet is available at the visitor center.
