Woody's Tavern: Country music and cheap beer

by zlatiq Written Oct 26, 2004

When we asked for a pub, we were told that the young people from Moab hang out in Woody's Tavern. it's a private club, so you need to buy a membership card for $4 and you need to pay extra $2 for the band. The band was playing country music (!?!i don't know if they always have country or just that friday night) and there were several pooltables. The beer was cheaper than the beer in Salt Lake City.

    Woody's Tavern: Pints without Pain

If you've read my warning about bizarre Utah liquor laws, you'll know that finding a spot for a post-hike pint can be frustrating? Eureka: we found one here. Woody's is your no-frills, no-attitude oasis for a cold one on a sunny patio or in the bar with no annoying ado. It's a battered local's haven with pool tables, darts, DJs on Thursdays, live bands (cover price) during high season, and some basic pub grub to soak up the alcohol. Puffers are even welcome to light up on the patio: almost unheard of in this state.

We were here twice and found the service friendly (order your own at the bar) and that patio great for kickin' back with a libation on a September afternoon or evening. Woody's opens at 2:00 pm and I'm guessing it's packed on summer weekend nights so if you're looking for nightlife, this is your place.

    After riding Porcupine Rim, we...

After riding Porcupine Rim, we decided to go get some food and grog. I had been to Moab about four months earlier and knew of a cool little place to do so; The Rio. You have to order beers out of the cooler because they are not 3.2, but full strength beers. All beers on tap only contain 3.2% alcohol (Thanks to Utah regulations and liquor laws).
The Rio has great live music every Friday and Saturday night at around 10:00 pm. The Rio is kind of a local hang out, and is know as a mellow hippy bar. The atmosphere is cool and friendly, even to outsiders. The food is cheap, but very tastey for bar food. This is the place to be if you are looking for nightlife in Moab, UT. We ran into a couple of girls that I went to college with. It is truly a small world. It was nice getting the scoop from people I had gone to school with, and starting new friendships.

Dress Code: Come as you are. Very casual. Shorts, t-shirts, sandles. If you show up in a suit or tie you may be asked to leave :)
