A new purpose for a Grand Old Dame
The Hotel Utah was the finest hotel between Denver and San Francisco from 1911 to the early 80's. Everyone who was anyone stayed here when they came to Salt Lake. With white gloved porters, fine dining, and an elegant lobby the hotel was simply the best place from which to enjoy the city.
But society changes, needs are met in new ways, newer hotels with national names invaded town and the Grand Old Dame was becoming a little ragged on the edges. So she was remodeled, reinvented and renewed and opened up in 1993 as an office building with a twist. Renamed the Joseph Smith Memorial Building it is now used in a variety of ways. Companies can still cater dinner in the old dining room, Weddings are still held here, new dining options are available on the upper levels, special movie screenings are shown in the very large theater, and family history beginners can search for family names on the mezzanine.
The beautiful lobby has been spiffied up and for that alone a visitor should walk through the doors and look around. The turn of the century opulence remains. Music might be playing softly by a pianist, and the statue of the name sake Joseph Smith stands nearby. Ask about tickets to the movie depicting his life, they are free.
