Brigham Young wanted the Tabernacle roof to be self-supporting, without pillars or any other to obstruct audience views, so bridge-building techniques of the day were employed. The domed roof was created by using steam to bend the massive beams and weighing them at both ends. Red sandstone was used for the 46 supporting piers was quarried from Red Butte Canyon, east of Salt Lake City. 1.5 million feet of lumber was hauled from the Wasatch Mountains to complete the project. It took 12 years to complete the project. The 11,000-pipe Tabernacle Organ features beautiful golden pipes made of round wood staves, hand-carved from Utah timber. Ten pipes from the original organ still work.

During the tours they demonstration the Tabernacle's remarkable acoustics. You may sit in the rear of the building as the tour-guide drops a pin on the floor close to the podium. You can literally hear the pin drop. Grammy-award winning Mormon Tabernacle Choir calls it home.

Interested in music, choral music to be precise? Then take the time to listen to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
This is a purely volunteer choir with over 300 people who obviously love what they do, and they do it well!

Mormon Tabernacle Choir in the Tabernacle- 325 singers in the best acoustical setting.
Mormon Temple- took too many years to build to incredible asthetical beauty.
L.D.S. Conference Center- extremely large facility with fountains and levels of roof overlooking the city accessible at any hour for your strolling pleasure.
