    salt lake stench

the great salt lake is not particularly attractive, it is swarmed by flies and smells of something rotting

Unique Suggestions: get in the water so that you too can come to the realization that things float higher in the denser salt water

    Fun Alternatives: go hiking!!

One thing everyone does when they come to Salt Lake city is to naturally take a trip out to the Salt Lake itself. In a way, the lake is unique, being incredibly saline (about 8 times more so than the ocean). It is also quite briny and hence smelly, about 15 miles out of town, and for the most part just not the great time I thought it would be when I got there. It's perfectly safe to 'swim' in, although the salt both stings your eyes if you get it in them and it keeps you from being able to sink. You just float on the surface despite your best efforts to do otherwise. There are public showers at the Saltair facility (which has it's own freeway exit off of I-80). I found watching the shorebirds far more interesting and if you time your visit to coincide with their migration, they are spectacular in their numbers.

The Great Salt Lake...it really isn't much to see, but everyone wants to see it. So, go but my only warning is...there is not much to do here. It smells & its just really a place to stop & say you saw it. My suggestion is if you HAVE to go...go to the old SaltAir. It was the site of an old activities park, & when the floods came to Salt Lake City in the 80's, it became its own island, of sorts, and was unable to be used. (yes, this is water from the Great Salt Lake surrounding this building) Its a sad waste. If anything has been done in updating it here, please tell me.
