Light Rail or Bus, Salt Lake City
I tried hard to get a good picture of the light rail which is known as TRAX. There was a stop almost right in front of our hotel. Service appeared to be pretty constant. According to the UTA, Trains stop every 10 to 30 minutes between 5:30am and 11:00pm on weekdays and until 1 am on Saturday. No service on Sundays. The 15-mile line runs between 10000 South in Sandy (South Salt Lake Valley) and the Energy Solutions Arena, formerly the Delta Center located Downtown Salt Lake City. There are 16 stations
I understand that the downtown area (Temple Square and the area west of the State Capitol) is a fare free zone with no charge if the enter and exit in that zone. The standard one-way fare within the valley is $ 2.00 Full-fare tickets can be purchased from vending machines or when boarding the bus. These tickets are valid for two hours from the time of purchase and can be used as often as necessary on both buses and light rail. A full day pass is valid for unlimited rides on buses and TRAX for $ 5.00 These passes can also be bought at vending machines or from Pass Sales outlets at supermarkets and other retailers. They are the most convenient because they are self-validating and can be purchased in quantity and used as needed.

The light rail service in downtown is frequent and convenient, and if you stay in the downtown zone, it's free!
The line will take you from the University to the downtown area. I believe it goes south too.
Public transportation in SLC is not the greatest...making the TRAX lines though improved the things to some extent...but still in SLC it's better to rent a car; trafic is not bad and it's easy to find parking downton
I'm not absolutely sure, but I think I remember riding the bus at least once. Now, SLC in addition to the buses, has a light rail system which they call TRAX.
For the BUS: Pay when you get on the bus. If you board within the downtown Free Ride Zone, pay when you get off. The regular fare is $1.40. Correct change is required. Ask for a “transfer ticket” and you can switch buses or ride TRAX for up to two hours on the same ticket.
For TRAX: Purchase your ticket before you get on the train. You cannot buy tickets on board. Regular fare is $1.40 for two hours and $2.75 for a same-day round-trip ticket. Bikes are allowed on TRAX. Buses are equipped with bike racks
You do not need a ticket for the bus or TRAX if you ride within the Free Ride Zone in downtown Salt Lake City.
The Free Ride Zone goes from 400 W to 200E, and from 500 S to North Temple, but also includes the State Capitol at 500N.
We rented a car and it was snowing pretty hard. The road conditions for the mountain required chains or a 4X4 to go up to the ski areas. So, we parked at a park and ride and caught the bus to go up. $3.25 per person 1 way. You have to have exact change for the bus. Make sure to catch the bus number you got on because on the way down, you need to catch the same bus number in order to get back to where you parked. Several buses from different directions go up to the ski areas.
Trolley cars run through downtown Salt Lake City. I don't know how much or the schedule. We rented a car and didn't rely on this mode of transportation. You can see the waiting areas throughout town for the Trolley cars.
The TRAX light rail had a stop right in front of our hotel. On the top of the kiosk between the tracks were bird sculptures which I thought were interested. We didn't have a chance to ride the 15-mile line down to 10000 South in Sandy (South Salt Lake Valley). It might have been an interesting way to see Salt Lake. When I was here before I took some photos from the hotel window of the buses, but I was too busy to do that either even though the hotel told me that the downtown was a fare free zone with no charge if you enter and exit in that zone.

When I was there the city was rebuilding a lot of major streets and highways in preparation of the Olympic Games 2002. That caused lots of traffic jams especially during rush hour. Don´t know how it is there now.
The UTA trax rail system was a wonderful way to get around town. You buy ticket's from kiosk at any of the multiple stops and hop on and off as needed throughout town. Had no need for a car for the entire week.
Salt Lake City is well served by an efficient airport.
Public transport is very good, both bus and the new light rail system are both inexpensive and efficient.
Car hire can be a little expensive but is necessary for the out lying tourist attractions.
Very good service, but very limited too. There're just two lines.
