    John Jarvie Ranch

    Jarvie Store

This is a wonderful old ranch on the banks of the Green River. Restored and saved as an example of rural life at the turn of the last century. There are a couple camgrounds nearby to stay at while you are in the neighborhood. The ranch is near a rafting take out and so could be a visit after the river trip. John Jarvie settled with his wife Nellie in 1880 near an ancient crossing of the Green River. It continued to be a crossroads for the settlers in the Ashley Valley. The Jarvies established a store, and postoffice. He was on good terms with the Wild Bunch who holed up nearby after raids. Jarvie was murdered in 1909 by itinerants looking for money in the safe.
If you are lucky you can visit during the summer festival which can boast music, food and crafts. It does require a long dirt road. Either from the south on an 45 mile iffy dirt road through Crouse Canyon and across the swinging bridge over the Green. Or from the north by the state border this 22 mile dirt road is kept fairly well maintained and would be the better route in a passenger car. (The steep section through Jesse Ewing Canyon has been circumvented and is not a problem now). Pick up a pamphlet from many business in Vernal for maps and directions.

    The Uinta Fault

I've heard about this drive for years. I can't believe it took me so long to take it. This really is a short detour off the main highway that goes through an incredibly stunning geologic warp in stone. I know, I know that sounds dry and boring. But seeing this in real life with the morning sun shining on the Uinta Fault was eye-opening. You want to understand what forces create mountains, this is one of the best places I've seen to illustrate the folding and molding of rock, besides which it is really beautiful rock. Do you like the Navaho Sandstone of the Zions area? You'll find it here as well, hundreds of miles separating it, but looking equally as wonderful.
