    Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We visited Ben & Jerry's ice cream factory in Waterbury Center, about 5 minutes from where we stayed. This is the original factory, they have since added one in another part of Vermont. Ben and Jerry no longer own it, a Dutch company does, but the ice cream still tastes good. You get a sample of their latest flavor after the tour.

The Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury Center makes some very good apple cider, and you can watch them make it. They have free samples and also some really great donuts:) I ate way too many of those....

There seem to be two types of Vermonters - liberals {i.e. Vt. passed civil unions legislation last year},and taciturn folks who like their state just fine the way it is, and don't take kindly to change, thank you very much! Remember, with some exceptions {ie. ski areas},this is life in the slow lane, and the locals shake their heads at tourists who rush around or act like they own the state. A little respect goes a long way, I guess, wherever we travel.

For those not too familiar with the area, as well as those curious about the names of things, the Green Mountains are in Vermont, while the White Mountains are in neighboring New Hampshire, neaby to the East. While the Famed Green Mountains are clearly white in winter and covered in snow, the White Mountains are most definitely green in spring and summer. In fall, both sets of mountains display trees with leaves of many shades of yellow, red, brown and orange as well as evergreens, which never change color.

    WHY Vermonters hate leaf-peepers..

    by Osmun79 Written Mar 30, 2006

Vermont is a welcoming state, but that doesn't mean we won't get mad at you for your tourist ways. During leaf season, thousands of people flood local roads and highways to simply stare at the beautiful leaves and take some pictures. This is all good and fine, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE..

Don't hang out in the middle of the road and don't take pictures near someone's house. These two things are bound to get you the middle finger, insulted, or worse. If you insist on staring at our leaves, pull to the side of the road or visit a local farm. It is hazardous and illegal to stop on a traveled road without being off to the side of it, and every year there are accidents that could have been avoided by simple respect and common sense.

  • This is Vermont

by yeahyeahyeah Updated Dec 2, 2003

Locals generally want to be let be. They're friendly enough, just loners.
A wise vermonter being asked by a passerby "Have you lived here all your life?" replies "Not yet." They are also known for a quick wit.
Best advice I can give you is live and let live around Vermont. If you've seen Funny Farm with Chevy Chase, well....that says it.
