We seldom visit cemeteries, but made an exception for Green Mount Cemetery, located just outside of Montpelier. This is an excellent place to enjoy the Vermont landscape in the fall, as you can see the surrounding hills in various stages of turning red, orange and yellow.

The unexpected highlight of our exploration of the cemetery was the incredibly life-like sculpture of Margaret Pitkin. Here is her story.

Little Margaret died in 1899 at the age of 6. Her parents hired a local sculptor to make a statue in her image, giving him a photo to use as a model. However, once the statue was completed, they parents refused to pay him on the grounds that he had not faithfully rendered their daughter. Their proof? A button was missing from her left shoe. Then, in an amazing turn of events, the sculptor took out the photo he was given and showed that there indeed had been a button missing from the left shoe, leaving the parents no choice but to pay him for his work.
