When all else fails, I say go shopping. There is a cute little souvenir shop inside the train station. There are the usual tourist gifts of magnets, pins, and postcards. Plus, if your like me, you will want to take some goofy photos of yourself with some of the displays in the store.

Of course with a town known historically for its train station you will find historic trains on display at the train station. There is an outdoor museum of several train cars including a sheltered display of the Boston and Maine Railroad #494. This is a historic steam locomotive. The trains are part of the New England Transportation Institute and Museum.

When planning a car trip through New England one of the things I expect to find are old small town churches. To me this just speaks New England history. Here in White River Junction, as you would expect, there is one such church. Its a small white church sitting on a narrow street. From first glance I could tell it was a typical country Methodist church from its design. I have seen hundreds of such churches and always find them fascinating.

There is a small museum in White River Junction that is more interesting than I had imagined it to be. It is full of unusual and fun curiosities that have to do with the history of museums. The building has been restored to its historical architecture and is interesting on it own right. What I did not understand, but found fascinating in an unusual way was the large picture attached to the museum of the river located in White River Junction along with a giant pickle. I did not have a lot of time to actually explore the museum or I would have asked about the photo.

I am always fascinated with war memorials when I travel. My father was a World War II veteran so they have a special meaning to me. The War Memorial in White River Junction is unsual and very beautiful. There is a stone with the dedication to the veterans of foreign wars. And there is a flock of birds flying up into the sky all around the memorial. They look like the spirits of the veterans are being freed and allowed to fly on into eternity. I have not seen a war memorial quite like this one before. Its in a small park along the river in the city. Its easy to miss it, so keep your eyes open. If your sentimental like me it will be worth your time to find it and experience the moment.

The Vermont Lines bus routes cross at White River Junction. I was travelling between Boston and Montpelier. On arrival all the passengers are asked to get off the bus whilst the bus goes into the small garage there for the vehicle to be re-fuelled and the windscreen washed. Normally the service waits 20/30 minutes before continuing allowing passengers about enough time to get and drink a coffee - there is a notice saying this is available for free on presentation of a valid ticket.
At least 2 other routes come in at about the same times and passengers change from one route to another.
