Not too far south of Old Town, but before you get to the popular Mount Vernon, there is another bit of George Washington history you should see. Woodlawn Plantation was part of George Washington's vast estate here in Virginia, and when his nephew Lawrence Lewis married George & Martha's foster daughter Nellie Custis, Woodlawn was their wedding gift! The mansion is believed to have been designed by the architect of the US Capitol. If it's a clear day you can see all the way to the Potomac. There are lovely gardens, especially in the Spring and Summer. If you are there around Halloween, they give ghost tours which are fun. Also on the grounds is a small house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright called the Pope-Leighey House (it was relocated to the site).

Woodlawn has a special place in my heart because my own wedding took place here.

Try the active visit. Alexandria and Washington DC are great for active people. For example, take the bike path from old town all the way south to Mount Vernon (George Washington's home) for a beautiful ride/jog/skate. Or take the path north to Washington DC and tour the city on bike or skates. the path goes along the potomac river and offers some beautiful views of the nation's capital.

Not much know except this plaque and the anchor. Walk down King Street to the edge of the Potomac where you will see this little triangle of grass between buildings and a marina beyond.
