I just moved from Monterey, so it was a quick decision to try Monterey's Pizza in Alexandria. While unpacking the boxes in our new apartment, we needed sustenance, so we googled this place, checked out the menu, and called in our order. The pizza really has nothing to do with Monterey other than an artichoke here and there, plus lots of garlic. They do have a nice selection of pizzas from their top shelf pizzas (10 inch pizza for $12) to their gourmet pizzas ($10 for a small to $19 for an extra large). They also offer wings, subs, calzones, salads, and more. We ordered a dozen of their so-called jumbo wings (10 for $8) which were just regular sized wings, hence much overpriced, along with a large peperoni and mushroom pizza. The pizza was excellent, but that with the wings just enough for two of us. My favorite thing is their website with its hilarious typos. They claim to offer "Mandrain oranges," "Sweer Red Peppers," "Virigin Olive Oil," "southwestren chicken," "Mozzarello cheese," "Brocoli," "pineaplle," Caser Dressing," "spinch salad," "thousands island dressing," and keep in mind their pizzas "are true works for art!" They deliver to most of Alexandria including Old Town, Del Ray Community, Arlandia, and Crystal City. Leave a Comment

Okay, Bilbo Baggins is perhaps the worst-named restaurant I've ever stepped foot in. It gets me more in the mood for something like Chucky Cheese's rather a place for a beer and a relatively expensive meal. Even Baggins Tavern would sound better. The good thing is they didn't go over the top with the geeky Lord of the Rings theme, so once inside the door, the place felt like any other neighborhood bar. OK, back to our visit. We arrived early, probably 6:45 pm and it was pretty quiet inside with just a few customers, most at the bar with one full table in the non-smoking dining room. I was happy to see several flat screen TVs around the restaurant, so I could keep an eye on the NFL playoffs during our meal. Their beer list was impressive, with a great variety of draft and bottled beers from all over Europe and the US; I selected a German Bitburger. I was not as impressed by the dinner menu which had an odd variety of relatively expensive entrees but no burgers, sandwiches, or other pub food... kind of odd for a pub! They try to be way to fancy with their entrees and really have nothing simple on the menu; some examples include wasabi salmon in miso soup broth, cinnamon pork loin with fruit chutney, and a beef filet with "garlic infused wilted spinach" and potato chips... really. Our meal started with the free raising bread that might have been the highlight of the meal. I had the seared yellowfin tuna, medium rare, that came served on a pile of mashed potatoes and asparagus for about $20. The tuna had a very tasty garlic and olive crust, but the fish itself was soft and old, rather than firm as you'd expect with good, fresh tuna. Our meal for three was nearly $100, far too expensive for a pub like this, no matter how good the location. To be fair, the presentation of the food was nice (probably far too nice for a bar), the service excellent and attentive, and the beer great. I'd gladly return for beer, but will skip dinner next time. Leave a Comment

Papa Reno's Chikzza claims to have "fine" Italian and Greek food. When I arrived, they immediately suggested the pizza, but I was immediately drawn to the Middle Eastern kabobs (especially after seeing some signs in Arabic and a small tapestry of Mecca on the wall!). My meal was ready in maybe 10 minutes, and cost $10.50. The kabob had about 5 pieces of slightly overcooked, but very tasty chicken, along with excellent rice, fresh naan bread, chickpeas, and a salad with lettuce, tomato, onions, and cucumbers. The restaurant began in 2004 and is located on the first floor of the Days Inn. It is a little run down (but so is the Days Inn!), but the food was very good. They offer eat-in, take-out, or to-go food, primarily sandwiches, fried foods like wings, pizzas, a variety of kabobs, and non-alcoholic drinks. Maybe not worth going out of your way to find this place, but if I lived in the neighborhood or was staying at the Days Inn, I'd be happy to order delivery from here every so often. Leave a Comment

Mai Thai is a great little Thai restaurant located in the heart of Old Town, just a 30 second stroll off the water. We had the crispy fried spring rolls ($6), the drunken noodles with chicken ($10), and the beef "ka pow" ($11). The spring rolls included crab and shrimp and were very tasty, but there were only three. The drunken noodles were spectacular, spicy with tender noodles, lots of meat, big cherry tomato halves, onions, and more. The ka pow was spicy and very flavorful as well, but it was in a relatively small portion and it only came with a few little veggies plus rice. We had the food delivered and the ordering was easy, and they arrived within 30 minutes on a Sunday evening. Mai Thai has two locations, one in Old Town and one in DC, as well as two Thai Phoon locations in DuPont Circle and Pentagon City, VA. Leave a Comment

Ernie's Original Crab House is actually not Ernie's Original Crab House, unless of course, you ignore his original crab house that was located at 1623 Fern Street, maybe a mile from the present location. It closed in 2004 or 2005. Even at the old location, you could argue that it wasn't Ernie's original crab house since old Ernie sold it to a Korean guy in the 80s. Later I think the original crab house moved to Richmond Highway in Alexandria, before ending up in its current unoriginal location in early 2008. We arrived around 1pm for lunch, and the restaurant was all but deserted, with just one table for two having soup and the Korean owner and his wife intently watching CNN. Once we got their attention, we were seated and we both selected the crab cake sandwiches ($12 each) with an order of fries ($2). The food came very quickly... though it was served on Styrofoam plates. The crab cakes were delicious, but the sandwiches were served on those cheapo bleached flour hamburger buns that cost about 35 cents a dozen at Safeway. The fries were better than average. The interior of the place has a kind of sterile look (aided by the fluorescent lights and white ceiling panels), with just a few nautical decorations to help establish the mood. The food was quick, service good, and the seafood itself pretty good, but the sides and extras kind of weak. They do have an all-you-can-eat crab dinner for around $35 that might be a good deal. Chicken Out is a high-end fast food restaurant, specializing in chicken. The menu is similar to the larger, national Boston Market with rotisserie chicken, chicken sandwiches, pot pies, salads, and numerous sides. Chicken Out adds a few additional items like chicken burgers and wraps. We visited the Chicken Out location in Old Town on South Washington Street. I had the quarter chicken with dark meat, a biscuit, and stuffing, while Laura had the Asian chicken salad. The chicken was tasty and juicy, the stuffing also moist and delicious, and the biscuit not bad. Our meal for two including drinks ran us just under $20, a good deal for this area. The restaurant is nice, clean, and spacious inside, but not as comfortable as a real sit-down restaurant. Of course, they bill themselves as fast food, so relaxing for an hour with your meal is not really the idea. They also cater events, and they claim you only have to give two hours notice. Chicken Out started in Gaithersburg, MD, and has expanded to over 20 stores in the Maryland, DC, Virginia area. Leave a Comment

LOGO by seagoingJLW This is a new place that has already established a good reputation. There are 5 steps to ordering here. 1. Select the fish that you want. 2. Select the method of cooking. 3. Select the sauce you want. 4. Select the sides. 5. Enjoy. (I am quoting the menu.)
I enjoy the salmon sauted with the dill butter sauce. Bread & Chocolate by b1bob Bread and Chocolate is a European style bakery on King Street.
I like their "pain au chocolat" or bread and chocolate in a croissant. I was here on business once and I stopped in and had one of those. It reminded me of the summer (1989) I spent in France and when I had a pain au chocolat every afternoon. Chart House with plane on approach to Reagan Nat'l by b1bob The Chart House is a fairly upscale seafood restaurant on the waterfront in Alexandria. I went there after a fairly recent business trip. It's a little pricey, but the food was good.
I almost ordered the pan-seared sea scallops, but instead, I took the coconut crunchy shrimp with two sauces and ginger rice. I loved the shrimp, but I wasn't too crazy about the rice. What ever happened to plain white rice? Leave a Comment Theme: SeafoodPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 1 Cameron, Alexanderia, VA 22314

Las Tapas by b1bob Tapas is a Spanish word for little bite sized appetisers, rather like hors d'oeuvres, but not exactly. I learned about this restaurant from Joan's page and the original plan was to stop off here and have a little supper before I made my way home. Thanks to Joan for recommending it on her page.
Because I took lunch in Arlington later than I thought and the portions were more generous than I could have hoped, I wasn't hungry, but I knew I would be by the time I got home if I didn't have a little something. Joan is right when she puts a price of $21-30 on here, but that was for entrees. I would have been willing to pay that price just for the sake of trying something new, but I just didn't have room. I saw something on the menu I hadn't had in years, not since I was taken to this little restaurant in Negreira, Spain (in Galicia). On that trip, I discovered that I couldn't get enough beef kidneys in sherry sauce. So, I had that and a little water. That filled me up until I got home, but it was out of the ordinary, even for folks like me.
