19th Century seaside decor - very comfortable atmosphere. Piano players keep the place lively with sing-a-longs and lots of fun.

Clam Chowder, Shrimp Cocktail, Crab Cake Sandwich, Hushpuppies and the Fresh Baked Bread - all great!

This is a great old tavern in a 200-year old building. Great atmosphere and very friendly bartenders. Always a good time.

I have to admit that my favorite menu item here is beer! The Crab Soup is awesome, especially when accompanied by a good pint of ale!

  • I'll list a few favorites from Old Town:
Taverna Cretekau, on King Street. It's Greek and yummy.
Union Street Public House, on Union Street (go figure). There's a bar and a restaurant, and it's a pretty big place. The atmosphere is casual, the food is good, and the beer is cold. 'Nuff said.
Chart House, on the water. Delicious seafood and a beautiful view of the river. Remember to order the special chocolate dessert (I forget the name) before you order your meal. It takes that long to make!

Straight out of the 18th century, costumed servers entertaining with toasts songs and humor, hard wood floors, hurrican lamps on the walls and period music playing in the background, gives the feeling that George Washington and his wife Martha can walk in at any second!

    "Baked ham and Cheese pye."
You might want to order the 'Publik Table' a bountiful feast of meats, fishes, fowl, vegetables, in season, the famous Sally Lund bread, and more!

I didn't order this, but if your party is HUNGRY try it! (I think it's meant for two)

  • ECCO Cafe on Fairfax street 2 blocks north of King Street in Old Town. It's good italian-american food, good bread and wines, good service.
Good food, lots of it, moderate prices. It is usually packed, so get there early.

    Spagetti Calamari.

Vermilion Restaurant - King Street, Old Town

  • Vermilion is one of Old Town's best five restaurants, and it annually ranks in the top half of the Washgtonian's 100 Best Restaurants in the entire Washington DC area.

We stopped by one night to meet some friends for happy hour, and enjoyed ourselves for over two hours with drinks, snacks, and great service. We sat at the small lounge area next to the bar and the restrooms, where the chairs are small under-padded colorful cubes, and the hanging lamps have upside down lampshades that are too low. Not the most comfortable lounge around, but it works.

Since arrived during happy hour, the guys chose from the three happy hour draft beer specials for just $2.75 each, while the girls enjoyed glasses of happy hour white and red wines for $4 and $4.50 each. After about an hour, we decided on food, so we ordered their spicy sausage corn dogs ($6), the mini burgers ($8), and happy hour fries ($4) and happy hour roasted olives ($4). The portions for all of the food, except the fries, was pretty small, but everything was tasty. There were about five of the corn dogs, which were easily the best item we tried. The mini burgers came in a pair, so we split them in half, and each half was about two bites. I was disappointed with the olives, because they all still had seeds and were very hard to eat as an appetizer.

Happy Hour: Weeknights 4 to 7 pm; numerous drink specials including house wines, draft beers, and more.

Layla's Lebanese Restaurant - King St, Old Town

  • Layla's is one of the nicest Middle Eastern restaurants I've ever tried, and their food is tasty, but the service is weak and lacking enthusiasm.

We arrived on a warm, stormy night in April and were quickly seated in the back of the restaurant near the kitchen. I was impressed with the decor, which is very modern and stylish. The waitress was friendly and prompt, but acted like she could care less that we were there in her restaurant. Not the service you'd hope to enjoy when you are spending $30 to $40 a person.

For dinner we started with a bottle of Lebanese wine, then we tried their stuffed kibbeh ($8) that is a crispy, deep fried, egg-shaped ball of ground beef, pine nuts, and onions; tasty and interesting! For our main courses we both had the special mixed grill that comes with three different kabobs: one ground beef kofta kabob, a marinated steak shish kabob, and a chicken shish tawouk kabob ($21). The meal is served with rice, and it has a few cooked veggies like a tasty tomato and onions. These meals also come with a basket of bread and an amazing garlic sauce for the meat.

  • The food was good -- a little bit too spicy for us, though. However, portions were rather on a small side. We had to wait quite a bit, too. This restaurant is nicely decorated.

I had Curry and my mother had some kind of Chicken; it was real good.

    Austin Grill: Tex-Mex Fare

  • Austin Grill is a Tex-Mex restaurant in Old Town, right along King St. The restaurant is part of a small chain found in Maryland, Virginia and DC. The food is decent, but fairly typical of a Tex-Mex chain.

On a recent lunch visit I ordered a steak and shrimp fajita and my friend got a taco combo platter. Chips and salsa came before the meals and the salsa was quite tasty. The bill came to $44, which is a bit pricey for the area and the type meals. A friend of mine warned me in advance that if I ordered a side salad to specify a “house salad” as you other wise get served a little bowl of lettuce.

Overall, the service was good and it’s a great location. Not one of my favorite Old Town eateries but a decent meal nonetheless. I’ve heard from friends that the Austin Grill has a good brunch on Sundays.

The Austin Grill has an interesting kids special. During the week, you can get 2 kids' meals free with the purchase of one adult entree.
