Reagan National Airport: Arlington, VA by b1bob Reagan National (formerly Washington National) Airport is the domestic airport just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. in Arlington, Virginia. I rather like this airport because it is fairly compact, it is convenient to get to via metro, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants in there before your flight. Reagan National Airport was the one most affected by the 11 September 2001 disaster, although none of the offending flights originated from there. It was the last airport to reopen and the Secret Service favoured closing it altogether due to its proximity to sensitive secure areas in Washington. However, the business community prevailed, and it reopened in October, 2001, with drastically augmented security. For example, there is a greater likelihood of an air marshal watching over your flight, more drastic searches in the main checkpoints are conducted together with follow-ups at the gate, and you have to remain seated (no exceptions) the first 30 minutes of a flight out of Reagan and the last 30 minutes of a flight in. DCA is actually here in Arlington just outside of Washington, DC. With direct Metro connection and easy car access from the NW district of Washington this is my favorite airport in the area. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

RONALD REAGAN WASHINGTON NATIONAL AIRPORT by matcrazy1 There are 3 airports which serve Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and the Maryland suburbs: 1. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in Arlington, approximately 5 miles south of downtown Washington, D.C., in the eastern part of Arlington, south of Pentagon, by the Potomac River, next to the district called Crystal City where many hotels and restaurants are placed. 2. Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) located both in Fairfax and Loundoun county, approximately 23 miles west of Arlington (26 mi to downtown Washington, D.C.) on the Fairfax-Loudoun County line. Maps here. 3. Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) located in Maryland, 38 miles northeast of Arlington (32 mi to downtown Washington, DC) and 10 mi south of downtown Baltimore. FROM AIRPORTS TO ARLINGTON 1. DCA (0 min.) - you are in Arlington; there is metro station (on my picture) adjacent to Terminals B and C (on level 2; yellow and blue line). More options here. 2. IAD (approx. 40 min.) - take Express metrobus 5A to Rosslyn Metro station in Arlington ($3.00 paid at driver, get change ready); take free transfer if you are going to continue travel by either other metrobuses or metrorails. Timetable: here. Warning: the jorney may take longer time in rush hours. More options here. 3. BWI (approx. 60 min.) Take an Amtrak train to Union Station in Washington, DC (40 min.). It costs $13.00. Details here. Then take a metro to Arlington ($1.35 - $2.50). More options here. Leave a Comment

While I usually fly into gigantic Dulles Airport in Washington DC, I have occasionally been lucky enough to book a flight through cozy little Reagan National Airport nestled snugly on the banks of the Potomac alongside Crystal City in Alexandria, VA. National Airport opened in 1941 and now handles about 18 million passengers per year. Dulles opened in 1962, and it handles just a few million more passengers at around 24 million per year. Reagan's benefits over Dulles are primarily proximity to the city and available public transportation options. From downtown DC you can be at Reagan in 10 or 15 minutes compared to 30-45 minutes at Dulles (or more with traffic). From Dulles your only transportation choices are a few buses and taxis; Regan is connected to the city by the Metro, numerous buses, taxis, and even a jogging/biking trail. The airport is also the site of historic Abingdon Plantation. This was once a 2,700 acre farm along the banks of the Potomac, which has now been reduced to this tiny one-acre site tucked between two parking garages and the metro station. The land was granted to Robert Howson in 1669, the plantation was built in the 1740s, and it was home to the Alexander family (after whom Alexandria was named), as well as George Washington's stepson John Parke Custis and Nelly, his granddaughter. In 1930 the old plantation burned, but the site was preserved for its historic significance. In the 1990s the airport authority stabilized the site and enabled visitors to see and understand its historic significance. Historic Terminal A at Reagan Washington Airport houses a historical collection and interpretive signs relating to the old plantation. The plantation can be reached from Level 2 of Garage B on the route to Garage B/C. Leave a Comment

The Metro is the best way to get here in my opinion. It is fast and easy and will bring to you many areas of the town without having to worry about parking or the like. As with everywhere on the Washington Metro, it is pay per distance so have money with you to top up your card. Leave a Comment Theme: Subway/Metro

Sheraton and Days Inn shuttles by b1bob Many hotels in Arlington offer shuttle service to either Reagan National Airport, the nearest metro stop, or both. I'm not talking about just the swanky ones like Sheraton National, but also decent, but more modest ones like Days Inn on Arlington Boulevard across from Fort Myer. There, I used the shuttle to take me to Rosslyn from where I went to Ballston Common to take supper with a good friend. My most recent turn with a hotel shuttle was when Matt, Urszula, Kathy, Chris, and I piled into a courtesy van that goes to the Pentagon City metro stop when we ventured into D.C. that Saturday morning. Some shuttles leave the hotel on as "as needed" basis between certain fixed hours and some leave every fixed period of time. If your hotel has one of these shuttles, ask the front desk about the frequency of departure and where it goes. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

METRO TRAIN AT ARCHIVES-NAVY MEMORIAL STATION by matcrazy1 Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) runs efficient system of transportation both by metro and by scheduled buses called metro buses. The one system covers Washington DC and adjacent areas of Maryland and Northern Virginia including Arlington. In a downtown the metro trains go underground whereas outside they often run above ground. The five metro lines are named and marked by the following colours: Blue, Green, Orange, Red and Yellow. Look at the map of metro system here. Transfer stations are marked on Metro maps with a double black circle. The stations are always marked on all maps of Arlington, I saw. To get to the nearest metro station you can: - walk (from Arlington National Cemetery to Arlington Cemetery metro station) - take a metro bus (from Fort Myer to Rosslyn metro station) - take a shuttle van/bus from your hotel (ask at the desk). METRO LINES TO ARLINGTON The following three metro lines cross the Potomac River to reach Arlington: 1. Yellow line (take direction Huntington from DC) 2. Blue line (take direction Franconia-Springfield from DC) 3. Orange line (take direction Vienna/Fairfax-GMU from DC). Example fares to Arlington Cemetery Station (reduced/regular; time of travel): - Union Station: $1.35/$1.60; 18 min. - Archives - Navy Memorial: $1.35/$ 1.40; 16 min. - Capitol South: $1.35/$1.55; 18 min. - Reagan Washington National Airport: $1.35/$1.35; 9 min. Details on how to use the metro system are put in my transportation tips on my Washington, DC page. METROBUS STOP SIGN by matcrazy1 We (my wife, Kathy, Chris and me) used the metrobus to come back from Pentagon metro station to our hotel (Sheraton National Arlington) at night. We were just after VT-meeting, how to say, a little bit amused but not as much to take expensive taxi. At the end of our trip Nat took a metrobus from Dulles International Airport to nearest metro station (the bus arrived with delay). Scheduled buses run by Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) are called metro buses. The company runs metro system, too and covers Washington DC and adjacent areas of Maryland and Northern Virginia including Arlington. Details on how to use the metrobus system are put in my transportation tips on my Washington, DC page. Leave a Comment

THERE ARE NUMEROUS HIGHWAYS (BY PENTAGON) by matcrazy1 EASY TO GET LOST It's not my recommendation, first because it's hard to get around there. There are numerous highways, freeways and streets of which some (few) are one way. It's really easy to get lost. Even Nat, an able navigator, was thrown for a loop when he was with us. Just in case... keep on main highways and look for a gas station, parking or helpful direction signs. PARKING The second disadvantage of driving around is parking which mostly cost a few bucks even for short time parking. There are numerous parking lots in downtown Arlington, especially along business areas of metro lines corridors. There is large parking for visitors to Arlington Cemetery (paid). YOUNG BOYS AND OLD LADIES Generally they drive carefully but... watch for young boys and old ladies. Once, I saw old lady who drove too... slow and changed lanes probably without looking at rear mirrors (she turned back instead) and... forced other car to break. On multi-lane highways do not change lanes if not necessary and follow the traffic. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home
