Ashland Coffee and Tea is a great place to hear nationally-known singer/songwriters, blues musicians, and others. They call it a "listening room." which means you know you will be able to hear the music. They serve soups, salads, sandwiches, and nighly specials like quiche, and you can have beer or wine in addition to their coffees and teas. Music nights are most often Thursday through Saturday. The music usually starts by 7:00 or 8:00, and so it isn't a late night. Check out their website for the lineup of coming artists. I don't have any vested interest in the place except that I sure want them to stay in business, because it's OSC's and my favorite place to go to hear great artists play fine music.

Ashland Movie Theater is a throwback to the old days in more ways than one. Enlarge the photo and examine the architecture. Also, whereas these multiplex theatres at the mall have more screens than anyone from Roxboro can count charge $10 for a movie ticket, you can get tickets for $3 here. Make no mistake, these aren't first-run films for that low a price, but the old-time atmosphere makes it worth it.
