A Virginia Tech football game in Lane Stadium

The Virginia Tech Hokies are one of the best college football teams in the United States. They play their home football games in Blacksburg's Lane Stadium, which is located on the campus of Virginia Tech. The games are usually played on Saturdays in the fall and attract crowds in excess of 60,000 people.

Virginia Tech is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, which includes a number of other schools with strong football programs, including Florida State, Miami, Clemson, and Georgia Tech. Virginia Tech's biggest rivalry is with the University of Virginia, which it traditionally plays against every year in late November.

Equipment: A blanket for October and November games, because Lane Stadium can get windy and cold. Also, rent or buy a seat cushion (preferably one with a back support). Lane stadium has aluminum bleachers, which are hard and cold after a few hours on an October or November day.

    Virginia Tech Basketball

While Virginia Tech is primarily known as a football powerhouse, it also has good men's and women's basketball teams. The men's team made it to the 2nd round of the 2007 NCAA college basketball tournament, while the women's team also had a winnning record. Basketball games are played in Cassell Coliseum, an on-campus arena built in 1961 which seats approximately 10,000 spectators.

  • Tech Games

Virginia Tech is a huge sports school. The whole town gets all hyped up for football games. You will notice that you can see the stadium from almost anywhere near downtown. The town is very exciting on game days...but parking in next to impossible. Take the bus... the BT (bus) is great and services everything in town.

    Virginia Tech Football

by HokieinNC Written Apr 30, 2004

Well, as 70,000 plus people descend on this small mountain town on fall Saturdays, one might ask "What is the deal??" (my girlfriend asked me this question, obviously not from the Burg). The deal is Hokie football. My answer was: take a look around at this town...this is all we have! (joking of course).
Game Day in Blacksburg is a great experience. Now in the ACC athletic conference, Hokie fans will welcome new rivalries and new visitors to the area. Don't be afraid to wear your school colors. Tech fans love to tailgate and love to talk football. If you are from the ACC, you will be especially welcome. Tech fans are extremely excited to be a new addition to the conference. Aside from maybe a drunken student, Hokie fans are some of the most friendly you will meet (except if you are from WVU).

The Walk up to Lane Stadium, you will feel shivers up your spine in anticipation of the game to come. The sound of Bill Roth's voice (the voice of the Hokies) blaring from tailgaters' cars with the crisp fall Appalachian mountain breeze blowing in your face. Enjoy it, endure the turkey gobble over the loudspeaker to charge up the Hokie faithful, and take in the sea of Orange and Maroon that screams "Go Hokies!" And if you run out of things to talk about with a Hokie fan, just ask "What is your all-time favorite Michael Vick play?"

    Before A VT Football Game

Virginia Tech is one of the best places to see great college football. The stadium has been constantly rated as one of the hardest for teams to play in due to the loudness and enthusiasm of the fans.

Equipment: No bags or umbrellas are allowed in the statium so be sure to leave those at home. Seat cushions can be rented at the stadium. Food and drinks as well as all sorts of VT merchandise can be purchased in the stadium as well
