I found myself on the beach in Chesapeake Virginia with a rental car and a day and a half to get to Washington DC. The road less traveled took me across the Bay Bridge tunnel and up the eastern shore. First stop was the National Wildlife Refuge. Can't miss it on the right if you are driving north.
The visitor center has exhibits and videos on habitats and a wildlife viewing area. Walk the nature trail to the top of a World War II bunker where you'll have a panoramic view of marshes, barrier islands, bays, inlets and the Atlantic Ocean. The refuge also has a photography blind that overlooks a freshwater pond.

Cape Charles has a variety of architectual styles. Beautiful grand old homes with real widows walks, old salt boxes and cute cottages. If you are a fan of "Island style" go check out the Bay Creek organizations new Marina developement on the outskirts of Cape Charles VA. They have built massive bahamian colored mini manses all neatly stacked in line. You will also find shops, restaurants and a marina alongside.

Beautiful sunsets, brisk air and no crowds. Even on a sunny summer day we are still blessed with relatively few people.

Bay Creek, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nichlaus Signature Golf Courses.
Even before the course opened Golf Magazine was inspired to write:
"Playing the front nine at Bay Creek may just become one of the most stunning visual experiences anywhere along the East Coast! But if you can take your eyes off the scenery, you are in for a thrill of target golf, with 110 acres of lakes alone, not to mention rolling fairways, bulk-headed greens and seaside dunes blowing with sea oats and beach grasses."
Currently open to the public.
This stunning golf course has wonderful amenities. A top notch pro shop, 2 restaurants and numerous other shops all within the resort. The town of Cape Charles also offers charming water front character.
Equipment: Your golf clubs
Sun screen
Mosquito repellent
and a hearty thirst and appetite to quench at the various dinning facilities.

Beautiful sails at sunset aboard the 65 ft. two-masted gaff-rigged schooner Serenity.
Lay back or lay to. Try your hand at the helm, setting sails or just wrap your hand around a drink. You may enjoy sightings of dolphins, pelicans, and other wildlife. Each cruise is as unique as the Chesapeak Bay itself..
Equipment: make sure your footgear is appropriate. If you do not have deck shoes sneakers will do. Please avoid black soled shoes and any type of heels.

A beautiful spring day is the perfect time to tool around Cape Charles area. The air is crisp, the scenery delightful, good roads and wonderful pit stops.
This activity is very special in that each year we do this a number of times to raise money and awareness for various not-for-profits. The one pictured here was for M.S.
