The Outer Banks are barrier islands creating the easternmost coast of North Carolina. There are miles and miles of beaches. The northern part is highly-developed, but when you go south, there are huge wildlife refuges where you can have a strip of beach all to yourself. Popular activities are fishing, observing wildlife, windsurfing, hang-gliding, golfing, hanging out on the beach, and cleaning up after hurricanes.
