TYPICAL HOUSE, DOWNTOWN CHARLOTTESVILLE by matcrazy1, 4 more photos Looking at numerous small, luxary boutiques, then upclass houses and residencies located around compact downtown and near university as well, I had an impression that Charlottesville is a small (40,000) mostly upclass city with large (20,000) student population which succesfully tried to mingle tradition with modern living. Thomas Jefferson's town has long been known as one of the best places in America to go to college, and a terrific place to retire. A 2004 Frommer's survey ranked this laid-back kind of place as the No. 1 place to live among 400 U.S. cities. The hills have vineyards and lush horse farms; the town has wine bars and chic fusion-style cooking, plus lots of good cheap student eats. Leave a Comment

Charlottesville is a southern town but being a university town it's also quite cosmopolitan - if that's a good thing! Quite a few celebrities live in the area, so we have our share of the snobbish rich folk, and yuppies too, but you will find an active international community associated with the University (I find Russians everywhere I go around here!) as well as the always wonderful country people. "Rio" is pronounced "rye-oh" by the locals, some people will actually get confused if you ask how to get to "Ree-oh" road.

The students and professors at the University of Virginia (UVa) have quirky terminology that is unique and immediately identifies the user as a member of the university community. For example, they call the university's campus "The Grounds" and NEVER use the word campus. Also, instead of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, UVa has "first years", "second years", "third years" and "fourth years". Thomas Jefferson is usually referred to as "Mr. Jefferson". Also, the part of the school where undergraduates take business classes is called the "Comm School" (short for School of Commerce) instead of the Business School. Leave a Comment
