 | Charlottesville Restaurants | Tips 11 - 20 of 58 | | Just before leaving charming Charlottesville we entered the Nook as the name (Indian?) sounded somewhat exotic for us. We didn't like fast-food like interior design, but the very hospitable (southern hospitality!) waiter after a short talk encouraged us to buy their sandwiches we ate walking along the downtown mall. The restaurant offers breakfasts, sandwiches, sandwich-platters and diner-style lunch platters.
We bought chicken and ham sandwich ($4.25 each) and they tasted good although it was nothing special. Leave a Comment

A walk in the downtown mall on a warm spring or summer day would not be complete without a gelato. And you can get one at Splendora. They carry a wide range of flavors including Italian favorites pistachio, dulce de leche, hazelnut, and straccitaella. I would have to say that it's not quite as creamy as the real stuff in Italy but the flavor is definitely there. Get it in a cup or cone but do get it!

Bizou offers up traditional samplings but with a contemporary treatment and presentation. The interior is reminiscent of an old-time greasy spoon with its narrow space. They also offer seating outside on the Downtown Mall. The menu has seafood, meat, and chicken dishes. Not bad. People are serious about their Bellair. Their signature sandwiches (with names like the Jefferson, the Keswick, and the Farmington) have cult like followings. They have recently started franchising "the Market"s at other tiger fuel stations, but Bellair is the original, and is considered the best. They use top shelf ingredients and everything is made fresh. If you like sandwiches, this is your place. Thier side salads are great too. We stopped at Blue Moon Diner on our way out of town. Though it looks like (and is!) a hole-in-the-wall greasy spoon, the food was excellent and filling, We had blueberry pancakes, omelets, and coffee for about $10.00. They have a few tables out on the street where you can enjoy the sunshine and watch the cars, people, and pets go by. The Blue Moon Diner is also a popular spot for nightlife with a long-standing tradition of live music. In 1746, Scotsman "Scotch John" Michie (pronounced "Mickey") purchased 1,152 acres of land from Patrick Henry's father, and in 1784, Michie's son, William, built this tavern on a well-traveled stagecoach route at Earlysville, 17 miles (28km) northwest of Charlottesville. A wealthy businesswoman, Josephine Henderson, saw its value as a historic structure and in 1927 had it moved to its present location and reconstructed. Michie Tavern stands today as a tribute to early preservationists. Included in the 30-minute living-history tours are the Virginia Wine Museum and reproductions of the "dependencies"--log kitchen, dairy, smokehouse, icehouse, root cellar, and "necessary" (note the not-so-soft corncobs). The general store has been re-created, along with an excellent crafts shop and the Printer's Market, offering newspapers, money, and other early American printed items. Behind the store is a gristmill that has operated continuously since 1797. Plan your visit to Michie Tavern to coincide with lunchtime, when an all-you-can-eat buffet of Southern fare is served to weary travelers for reasonable pence in the "Ordinary," a converted log cabin with original hand-hewn walls and beamed ceilings. Expect a short wait on summer weekends and during all of October. The Hardware Store, along with the restaurant, also contains shops, all in a historic building that originally was a hardware store, hence the name. The food, the atmosphere, and the service are great. Stop by for lunch and savor their sandwiches. Also don't forget to have a bowl of peanut soup!
