Okay, so the decor is awful. Now that I've gotten THAT off my chest: the food is fantastic! Yummy, yummy, yummy. I have never been to Brazil, but have listened to my parents rave about their cuisine for years. Now, they don't offer hearts of palm here the size of your wrist (my dad's fave while in Brazil), but given ingredient constraints, my parents found this to be very authentic. Great food. The delicate flavors and perfect restraint with spices surprised me. Yum!
Everything I've tried here, and everything those who've dined with me have tried, has been great. El Girasol, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... I miss El Girasol SOOOOO much. I lived right by 10th Street on Wertland, so this was right around the corner from me. This place has all the standards, but they are just so*much*better here than at the chains like Amigos. The staff and owners just seem to care so much more, and you can taste it in the food as well as see it in the service. I LOOOOOVE mexican food. Eat it at least two (ok. three) times a week. So I know what I'm talking about! Their specialties are fantastic, so don't be afraid to try something new.

I'm not a fan of buffets. I think it harkens back to my childhood when we got to eat out very rarely (read once a year) and when we did it was something like Roots, where it was all you could eat and we planned for a week how we were going to make the most of the opportunity. You always feel like you have to try so many different things that they all get lumped together and the flavors are lost. We ended up at the Golden Corral because the company we are acquiring didn't have a big enough conference room to hold all of the employees while we told them about who we are and why we felt this is a good marriage. So we got to use a big room and afterwards all had lunch. The buffet does seem to have everything! There's an all inclusive salad bar, fresh baked bread items, loads of meat choices, the fried chicken looked really good. I stuck with some pulled pork, a half plate of broccoli and some stuffing with gravy. Not too much damage. :-) I completely skipped the big dessert bar. Man, could we have done some major damage to that when we were kids! Leave a Comment

Located in the Rio Hill shopping center, Kyoto offers some of the best Asian food in Charlottesville. I can't say enough about the service here. The staff seem to genuinely care about providing the best possible experience for each and every person that walks through the door. They don't serve sushi, but everything I've tried on their Japanese/Chinese menu has been outstanding (I'd go as far as to say that they do Chinese food better than any of the dedicated Chinese restaurants in town). If you're traveling north of the downtown c'ville area I'd highly recommend stopping by and checking things out.
Hawaiian Scallops would have to take the cake for me. Battered sea scallops tossed in a sweet and sour sauce with chunks of pineapple and mango. Their specialty teas (made to order) are also out of this world, the cold citrus honey tea is my personal favorite. This was my secret restaurant in Charlottesville. It is tiny--maybe ten tables. Maybe. The food here is soooooo good. Its not inexpensive, yet its not quite as pricey as some of the other restaurants that I consider to be in the same quality range.
Impossible to pick a favorite dish, but the Osso Bucco is fabulous. So are the veal cuts. So are the pastas. OH! And if you are fond of Italian Wine, this is THE place to go--they have a better selection than anywhere else in town (and in many other, much bigger, cities). Charming Thai Restaurant, photographs & mementos gave an authentic Asian Feel. Service was good, menu was restaurant, & everything was delicious.
Red Curry chicken & lemon grass beef were a hit. Everything around us looked & smelled good. a fun filled action filled place in Belmont area - open cooking with the chefs flaming up all kinds of tapas plates - great wines and draft beers, with music playing and young folks having a ball - a nice outside terrace when the weather cooperates its crowded and no reservation accepted - so expect a wait
grilled shrimp - bacon covered dates - flank steak - pumpkin soup!! Leave a Comment

Climb up the stairs from the entrance on the corner into the warm and inviting atmosphere of Michael's Bistro. Even if you don't have time to eat, take time for a drink here. Great atmosphere. The food is very good, but not excellent. However, it is some of the best on the corner, where most restaurants cater to students. So what you might not know about Charlottesville is that its nestled in one of the wealthiest counties in the nation. The countryside is full of people like John Grisham, Dave Matthews, Sissy Spacek, Howie Long... and a bunch of other people who I can't remember. Anyway, as a result, Charlottesville has some FANTASTIC restaurants, and this is the best of them! The atmosphere is great--unless you are there for a peak weekend like homecoming or graduation. If so, be sure to specify that you would rather NOT sit outside when you make your reservation. Trust me. Anyway, seated inside, the chef sends you a little appetizer to picque the interest of your palate--just sit back and take it all in, because the courses keep on coming, each one better than the next. Which leads me to my favorite dish....
CHOCOLATE SOUFFLE!!!! Be sure to ask if the chocolate souffle is available that night, because it must be pre-ordered. I don't even really like chocolate, and this desert? A little piece of heaven... they serve it with a "just right" creme anglaise, and are not stingy with the sauce (don't you hate places that are stingy with the sauce?). So good. Sooooo good.
