  • This place is not quite the dining experience that is L'Aventurra, but it is still good Italian. Great pasta dishes, low key atmosphere. I loved going here on just that night that you are craving pasta.

Zocalo: If timing is important, don't eat here!
  • Satisfaction:

  • While the food at Zocalo is edible, the timing of food delivery is absolutely horrible. Waiting for over 100 minutes for your entree to arrive with no apologies or retribution whatsoever should be a crime. After complaining, all we got were excuses - "its not my fault".
When dining out, the food is only a part of the experience. Inadequate and improper timing of food delivery can entirely ruin a pleasant evening. My date and I will not go back there under any circumstances, and unless you have a great deal of time and patience, you should look elsewhere to spend your money.

Since the bread was the only thing on our table for about 90 minutes, I would have to say this is it.

The Virginian is Charlottesville's oldest continuing restaurant. It was founded in the 1920s, and is still in the same location on University Avenue, in the middle of "The Corner", the commercial district adjacent to the University of Virginia. The Virginian's interior is long and narrow, featuring seating in booths along one wall and a bar along the other wall. The walls are covered with old photograph's of the University and Charlottesville.

The Virginian's menu features a range of burgers and sandwiches, as well as appetizers, salads, steaks, pasta, and seafood. For beer lovers, the Virginia features a good variety of microbrews in addition to the usual national brands.

Here is Indian food with a twist. With a touch of other Asian influences, this restaurant represents a bold step for a city the size of Charlottesville. The food is quite tasty, and service is good. It's only been open a short time; I hope it succeeds.

I had the chicken vindaloo. By the way, "vindaloo" is, as I understand it, the hottest style of curry. Fine for me, but for those with a more cautious palate, I recommend a milder dish.

Michie Tavern was established in 1784 by William Michie, a Scotsman. It was the social center of its community and also provided food, drink and lodging for travelers in those days. It was moved 17 miles to its present location which is close to Monticello. They only serve lunch and it's caffeteria style and features period dishes. The day we were here we could choose from fried chicken, pork barbecue, black-eye peas, green beans, potato salad, stewed tomatoes, cornbread or biscuits, and peach cobbler for dessert. After you fill your plate, you go to sit at long trundle tables in a dining room with wooden floors, a large brick fireplace, and are waited on by girls in period dress. The food is excellent and is very typical southern cooking. You can also take a tour of the original tavern and outbuildings for an additional price. It is only open from 11:15-3:30 from April through Oct. Hours are more restricted in winter.

The Hickory smoked barbecue was excellent. But the main attraction here is the historic surroundings.

Usually the Hampton Inn will have a restaurant within walking distance. They tore down the Tex-Mex restaurant where we ate last time we were here and were building something else there where it was.

The closest restaurant to the Hampton Inn was Chili's and I wanted to have one last meal at a non-chain restaurant or at least a new chain restaurant. So that ruled out Red Lobster. And I didn't feel like Chinese or I could have gone to the Great Wall. Other restaurants such as the Aberdeen Barn, Rococo's and Guadolajara were farther away.

Maverick's is on the highway in the shopping center. You could walk to it if you knew where it was but you can't see it from the Hampton Inn because there's other stuff and trees in the way.

There is outside seating around a fireplace where there is a fire if it is cool (last photo). Inside there is a bar (first photo) which has a large painting of a woman over it. In the photo you can only see her head and arm because the inside is all dark wood. There's a fireplace inside too.

Bob had a salad (pictured) and a milkshake, and I had a medium rare prime rib and steak soup (both pictured). I took some of the prime rib home.
