Assateague Light
grandmaR Says:
After the first 45 foot-high brick tower proved inadequate, the current 142 foot tall Assateague Lighthouse was built in 1867. It is an"early classic" round brick tower with lantern and gallery painted with red and white horizontal bands. The lantern roof is black. A natural...

McDonalds: Lighthouse view
grandmaR Says:
There is a McDonalds in Chincoteague. You need not be afraid that you will be without your hamburger and fries fix.But we didn't eat there. I had been told that the back of the McDonald's parking lot was a good spot to view the lighthouse. And it was.
Famous Pizza & Sub Shoppe: Near the Wildlife Refuge Entrance
grandmaR Says:
When we got to the motel, I had an upset digestive tract and kept having to go into the bathroom to 'meditate', so we took advantage of the free snack supper at the hotel and did not go out to eat. There are at least three pizza places in town - the Famous Subs and Pizza that...

Shop on the water: Great little shops
tpangelinan Says:
There are little shops every where on this island and many on the items for sale will be from the island craftsman or artist. Prices in the shops are good, not going to eat your fun money away, unless you buy it all! No matter where we went, every one was very nice and...

jelw Says:
I'm not talking about the beautiful waves on our gorgeous beach. I'm talking a friendly wave of the hand whilst driving.Locals all wave to each other even if we dont know who it is we are waving to. Not great big over zealous shaking of hand, more a gentle Hi there.

Not just steps
grandmaR Says:
Although one might expect that the lighthouse itself would not be handicapped accessible - after all the design of the thing means that there will usually be many steps to get to the top. Even the Sullivan's Island lighthouse which is the only one with an elevator has an...
No Ponies Here
grandmaR Says:
There are no wild ponies on Chincoteague Island. The only time there are ponies here is after the Pony Swim. At “slack tide” on the last Wednesday of every July, Chincoteague’s “Saltwater Cowboys” herd about 150 ponies across the Assateague Channel to move them from...
Snug Harbor-misleading advertising!
Snug Harbor Cottages and marina is where we stayed on our vacation in 2007. This place's website and advertising couldn't be more misleading. Promising you clean and affordable accommodations in their "villas". What a joke! The cabins ( which is what they are) are not clean, not comfortable and the people who work Snug Harbor are not accommodating or particularly nice for that matter. I personally am going to spend a bit more money and stay at Hampton Suites and have a real vacation this year instead of a lousy one!

The quiet parts of Assateague
tayloretc Says:
You have to be prepared to hike across sand and pack everything (including water) in, but the back country camping is great if you don't mind sharing sites with people. Like-minded people, but still. Maryland section only, but towards Virginia.
