  • Lighthouse view

There is a McDonalds in Chincoteague. You need not be afraid that you will be without your hamburger and fries fix.But we didn't eat there. I had been told that the back of the McDonald's parking lot was a good spot to view the lighthouse. And it was.

When we got to the motel, I had an upset digestive tract and kept having to go into the bathroom to 'meditate', so we took advantage of the free snack supper at the hotel and did not go out to eat. There are at least three pizza places in town - the Famous Subs and Pizza that I took a photo of and also Maria's Family Restaurant & Pizza6506 Maddox...

  • Fried Seafood!

Having been so close to the ocean, I had to get some seafood somewhere! We stopped at this little carryout place right off the main road into the park. I was the only one in there at the time, so I was waited on promptly - the two ladies running the show quickly provided me with a fried Crab cake sandwich (served with chips, hush puppies and a...

You know the drill, grab your camera and batteries and go to one of many places to catch a sunset, it's worth it! I love to sit on the docks or pier and use the surroundings to enhance the shot, palms ,lants, dock pillars, boats, whatever I can find! Just have fun!

There are places to eat on Chincoteague, and a small movie theater and putt-putt golf for kids, but since the island is small, you won't find a lot there, or in much of the surrounding island area. Dress code everywhere is very casual.

You need a car to get to Chincoteague itself, but once you get there, you can walk, bike, inline skate or drive through town or onto Assateague Island and to the refuge. Anything but a car is what I would advise to get the best experience for your time there. Bikes can be rented at several places in Chincoteague, as most shops, restaurants, motels...

Chincoteague Shopping

  • Great little shops

There are little shops every where on this island and many on the items for sale will be from the island craftsman or artist. Prices in the shops are good, not going to eat your fun money away, unless you buy it all! No matter where we went, every one was very nice and seemed to have a little story or two. Just have fun relaxing while you shop,...

Chincoteague Warnings and Dangers

  • Not just steps

Although one might expect that the lighthouse itself would not be handicapped accessible - after all the design of the thing means that there will usually be many steps to get to the top. Even the Sullivan's Island lighthouse which is the only one with an elevator has an additional 25 foot ladder to be scaled to get to the lantern room. But the path...

  • No Ponies Here

There are no wild ponies on Chincoteague Island. The only time there are ponies here is after the Pony Swim. At “slack tide” on the last Wednesday of every July, Chincoteague’s “Saltwater Cowboys” herd about 150 ponies across the Assateague Channel to move them from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island.

  • Chincoteague is the insect...

Chincoteague is the insect capital of the world being so swampy. The insects are looking for an unsuspecting tourist to munch on, and I mean munch on. I took the tram car into the Refuge without wearing insect repellent. Needless to say, I had thousands of welts.

Chincoteague Tourist Traps

  • by wildgirl12 Written Mar 21, 2008

Snug Harbor Cottages and marina is where we stayed on our vacation in 2007. This place's website and advertising couldn't be more misleading. Promising you clean and affordable accommodations in their "villas". What a joke! The cabins ( which is what they are) are not clean, not comfortable and the people who work Snug Harbor are not accommodating or particularly nice for that matter. I personally am going to spend a bit more money and stay at Hampton Suites and have a real vacation this year instead of a lousy one!

  • Beautiful Land Across the Water

Depending on what time of year you visit you will need a wind breaker and good walking shoes. If it is late Fall or Winter you will need a heavy coat, hat and gloves. A backpack is probably best, but if you are going to be there for more than a day, and plan to vacation there, you can pack whatever you are comfortable with. • The quiet parts of Assateague

You have to be prepared to hike across sand and pack everything (including water) in, but the back country camping is great if you don't mind sharing sites with people. Like-minded people, but still. Maryland section only, but towards Virginia.

  • Ponies up close and personal

On the Virigina side of Assateague, a few days before the pony swim the Saltwater Cowboys round the ponies up in small corrals that are accessible to the public. If you're looking for good photos, this is the time and place to get them.It does take the romance out of the event.

This is about the only way on to the island other than a boat, a small bridge over the bay to access the islands of Chicoteague and Assateague in Virginia. Assateague also has an entrance to the island on the Maryland side. Very nice marina here and alot of the restaruants.

  • Fishin' boats

This island is all about the seafood and fishing. There are many different boat marinas around to dock your boat or to go look at some neat boats. This poor old boat has all but sunk at the dock, the rear end is under water, but it still has some neat character which made for a photo op. .
