The new bridge formally called the Judge John Tisdale Memorial Bridge is a quick alternative for those who want to continue on Route 58 and bypass the start and stop traffic of beautiful downtown Clarksville. Construction on this bridge started in 2002 and it was completed in the summer of 2005. The new bridge is higher over the lake than the old one and it affords new vantage points of the lake and distant town. On crossing this bridge the first time, I saw coves and marinas which I hadn’t seen before.
For many years, what is now referred to as the old bridge was the bridge into Clarksville. The Route 58 Business bridge causeway, as it is officially known, crosses Buggs Island Lake and goes directly into downtown. When it was the only bridge, downtown businesses would benefit from the traffic. Some are fearful that well-established downtown businesses will eventually lose out to anything new that is built along the Route 58 bypass.
