Galax Things to Do
New River Trail State Park
A portion of this long trail along one of North America's oldest rivers runs through Galax, and we walked a short stretch along Chesnut Creek. The trail is really a gravel road, though not open to cars, and has few changes in elevation. Except for the fact that it's a road rather than a trail and has lots of bicycle traffic, it's an idyllic walk, with lots or small rapids in the river. There's also a campground (Cliffview) and a waterfall. Nothing strenuous about this, but very enjoyable for an afternoon or morning stroll. Further up the trail, Chesnut Creek runs into the New River itself at Fries, where there is an attractive park (with ice cream stand and Mexican restaurant) along the river.Related to:

a Pickin' and a Grinnin'
Don't miss the world's oldest and largest Old-time Fiddler's Convention, held the second week in August. It ranks with Merlefest and Union Grove as among the best. Tickets for the entire week cost $30 with individual day tickets ranging from $5-$10. Camping is available nearby and motels are less expensive than a lot of tourist places. There were $20,000 in prize money awarded to the participants in the 2005 event. In addition to fiddles, there is also competition for mandolin, banjo, dulcimer, folk song, and flat foot dance performers.Related to:
