Glen Allen Things to Do

  • J.E.B. Stuart Monument

Sometimes, you have to go some to go sightseeing and on rare occasions the sights pop up unexpectedly. I first happened on the J.E.B. Stuart Monument when I was campaigning with two good friends in the 2012 presidential campaign. A residential setting in the middle of a campaign is the last place one would expect to find a historical monument. This...

  • Walkerton Tavern

Walkerton Tavern was built by John Walker in the mid 1820s. Across the years, it has served as a tavern, store, post office, polling station, and even a field hospital for wounded Union Cavalrymen during the War Between the States. The tavern is tended by Henrico County Parks and Recreation. They rent it out to all sorts of events. In July, 2012,...

  • Meadow Farm Museum at Crump Park

Crump Park is a refreshing bit of nature and history amidst the suburbanisation of western Henrico County. Officially named General Sheppard Crump Memorial Park, this county park is complete with a duck pond (stocked with catfish), playground, and an open meadow for kite flying. The park's best part is Elizabeth A. Crump Manor, circa 1810, now part...

Glen Allen Restaurants

  • OK Mexican Food

We were driving home from Shenandoah National Park heading near Richmond and wanted to find somewhere to eat dinner. It was a group of seven of us and we figured Mexican food would be quick, relatively cheap, and good. Garmin directed us to this place as it was right off I-64 so we wouldn't have to go out of our way. At first I though it was some...

  • not as good as it smells

Phat Boyz is a small barbecue place on Route 1 next to Green Top. You can smell them slow-cooking barbecue outside. Like most good barbecue restaurants, it is so small that on the inside you have to leave it to change your mind. I bet a lot of people who go to Green Top to buy hunting gear are drawn in by this deceptive aroma. Sadly, the barbecue...

  • Indian, anyone?

Believe it or not, I hadn't tried Indian food until just after my 38th birthday. My buddy Dustin Gillis and I both wanted to try a different cuisine, so we agreed on Curry House. I was sort of nervous that everything on the menu would light up my life, but that's the price of doing research. I knew it would be different regardless and if it was all...

Glen Allen Shopping

  • One man's class...

Class and Trash is one of the funkier antique stores in the area. It is a two-storey brick building next to a garage on Route 1 south of Ashland. They sell architectural items, furniture, jewelry, artwork, toys and collectibles, and old advertising signs.

  • Where shopping is "pure pleasure"

Almost 100 stores with everything you can imagine. With more upmarket stores in the area, Virginia Centre Commons, or VCC as it's locally known, caters more to the lower end. This is not to say that it will soon suffer the fate of the former Azalea or the soon-to-be-former Cloverleaf Mall, but it attracts a different clientele than when it first...

  • Up the creek

The Creeks at Virginia Centre is a rather upmarket strip mall on Brook Road across from Virginia Centre Commons Mall. Major tenants include, but are not limited to, Circuit City, Barnes & Noble, Pet Smart, and Pier 1 Imports. On enlarging the photo, you can see the main tenant roster and the well-landscaped terraced creeks. Most recently, I went to...

  • Old fashioned Fourth of July

My friend Drew and I enjoyed a wide range of festive entertainment and activities at the 2006 event which include musical entertainment, patriotic arts and crafts, a petting zoo for children, contests and games for all ages, the new Little Patriot's Play Pavilion, and much more! This event featured tethered hot air balloon rides, a watermelon...

The weekend after every Mother's Day (mid-May in the USA and most countries, but some countries celebrate it other points of the year) the Maronite Catholic Church has hosted the Lebanese Food Festival since 1985. On the Friday and Saturday, it is on from 10am-10pm; on the Sunday, they have it from 10am-8pm. They offer shish kebab over rice,...

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

All Golf is a multi-purpose sport park along Route 1 in Ashland, near Glen Allen and Virginia Centre Commons Mall. Folks, let me make one thing clear here and now before gipper84 gives me the business in his tip, I'm not that good at golf. The idea of chasing a little bitty white ball down a well-manicured pasture just doesn't do it for me. However, one night Lee talked me into going mini golfing after taking pics in Richmond's East End. First, he hit a bucket of balls (folks, get your minds out of the gutter). I tried to hit one and it was about what you might expect of somebody who hadn't done it in 10 years. I also hadn't been mini-golfing in 10 years (the previous time was when I actually defeated my brother and my friend Fernando). I lost to Lee by 10 strokes. The ironic thing was, I did worst on the easier holes and best on the harder ones.

Equipment: A good set of golf clubs and plenty of patience. If you're playing with my group, you may want to also wear a hard hat.

  • Innsbrook Pavilion

Despite its corporate name Fas Mart Pavilion at Innsbrook, many people still call it by its original name, simply the Innsbrook Pavilion. Innsbrook is an enormous office park in Glen Allen. They decided to allocate some green space to have concerts, corporate picnics, and other events such as a Cajun food festival. The pictured event is of the...

  • Father Christmas at the Mall

The only redeeming value to visiting a shopping mall at Christmas is seeing the little nippers queue up to sit on Father Christmas' lap, giving them their want list, and having a snap taken of them together. It reminds me of a simpler time when I was doing similarly at Eastgate Mall (now named Fairfield Commons) and at Miller & Rhoads downtown.
