Looking for something different to do if you don't mind a little drive in the country to get there? Then you have to check out Luray Caverns. If you are into cavern tours, this one is not to be missed. There are rock formations that can be found nowhere on the planet, as well as a one of a kind organ that uses the rock to make the tones. This fact...more
Yes, I finally went and did it last weekend. I drove the famous Skyline Drive from north to south through the Shenandoah National Park. The drive is awesome! I am fortunate enough to have a car with a sunroof that opens wide so I could enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the park. The speed limit through the park is 35mph so it takes about 3...more
The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport is the companion facility to the Museum on the National Mall. The building opened in December, 2003, and provides enough space for the Smithsonian to display the thousands of aviation and space artifacts that cannot be exhibited on the National Mall. The two sites together...more

This is the in house restaurant of the Dulles Hyatt and where they offer breakfast. Tucked behind the lobby bar it hosts a fairly good sized buffet while also offering a decent menu selection as well. Offering plenty of seating in a couple smaller feeling rooms when not busy it can feel like you’re eating privately. We did enjoy this aspect...more
We had dinner on our last day in Virginia at the Kitbar. This was a first for me and I was pleasantly surprised. The interior was warm and welcoming, staff pleasant and helpful. It was not busy so we were seated right away and service began. Mark and I shared an imported Guinness, I only had half a glass mixed with coke. My daughter ordered a...more
My family decided to go Indian this time; something spicy and hot! The Curry N Kabob Indian restaurant is located literally 6 walking minutes from where we live. It was gloomy and threatening to rain so we drove there. It was early 4:30 pm so there were no people at the restaurant. It looks more like a fast food place, with a seating area. We...more
Tonight dinner was at the Turcuisine lounge and grill, a Turkish restaurant no doubt. Since we were unsure what to eat, I was happy when my husband mentioned there was a Turkish restaurant at the Worldgate Center. We headed there at 5:00 pm, which is an unusual time for me to dine. However since we had not eaten since two nights ago, my daughter...more
Generosity is something the American knows about and uses. When you hear the name Generous George's, you probably think its just the name of a chain of restaurants, wrong! They are a chain of generous restaurants serving generous portions of food for a decent price. They do carter for children very well I might add. Tonight at the Generous George...more
As a Diamond with Hilton I am entitled to free breakfast in the lounge. Breakfast in the lounge is quite good. They have a nice selection of juices, cereals, coffee, tea, bagels, toast, muffins, pastry, sausage, bacon, fruit, eggs and home fried potatoes. Other items such as french toast, pancakes and blintzes are served but not consistently....more
My wife and I literally discovered this place after searching for food close to our hotel. We are both big lovers of Indian Food so when we saw this restaurant we had to check it out for ourselves. This place is a real gem for both food and service. The food here is incredibly prepared with flavourful ingredients and beautifully presented by...more
The Cardinal was the sports bar/casual restaurant of the Hilton Dulles in which we were staying. My wife and I stopped in for a drink and a snack before heading out to visit with family. The Lounge is a large space with plenty of bar seating , tables and comfortable chairs and couches throughout. We took a seat at the bar and perused the menu. I...more
Although it is a chain, It is one of the best Chinese/Thai places in the area. It is famous for it's big mongolian BBQ bowls, but other things on the menu are equally good. They have daily specials and the staff is good. I am allergic to peanuts and they got the chef to use a frssh wok for my meal just so there would be no chance of contamination....more
Elements is the bar/lounge of the Hyatt Dulles. My wife and I arrived later than anticipated to the hotel on a Friday night due to a tire blow out somewhere in pennsylvania (added almost two hours to the trip as we went to a Pep Biys for a new tire). After such a stress filled journey we decided to have some evening drinks before settling in for...more
As a Diamond with Hilton I'm entitled to Lounge access; which is a nice perk. The lounge is a nice size with a flatscreen TV, tables and couches. There are several stations set up with beverages, coffe, tea, snacks, hot food, cold food, cookies and alcoholic beverages. My wife usually has her hot Jasmine tea and a cookie. My first visit to this...more

Dulles International Airport is a niced size airport right outside of the D.C area. My wife and I were able to find a few cheap fights out of Dulles which fit in perfectly with some of our roadtrips to this area. Staying locally at the Hilton provided us a free airport shuttle and a place to stash our car during our trips.Security and check in here...more
Most of the local area hotels provide complimentary airport shuttle service. The shuttle is fast and free which is always a bonus in my book. Our hotels even allowed us to keep our car parked in their lot after we had checked out and took down our plate number. Both visits we returned with our car thankfully still in their lots.more
Now that I have been here for a few months I have noticed the abundance of deer; especially on my route home from work. I have even had them surrounding my car (like in the movie "The Ring 2") in the parking lot as I leave work at 11pm. With that in mind I was somewhat suprised at the lack of deer crossing signs in this area. I have had two close...more
Being that this area is known as the tech corridor of Virginia, I was not suprised at the number of people using their cell phone whie driving. What I am suprised at is the number of them that do not use any type of hands free device. Therefore there are many inattentive drivers here. I actually watched a guy plowed into the back of a tow truck...more
Luggage and bags:
Normally a trip like this would just be a weekend so a simple rollaboard would do. We on the other hand were using this location as a jumping pint for catching a flight to another destination so we had a rollaboard as well as a suitcase.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: The Spring weather is unpredictable but we packed for both warm and cool weather in this area.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Shampoo, lotion, hair gel, toth brush, tooth paste, deodorant, contacts, contact solutions.
Photo Equipment: My digital camera, memory card reader, charger and video camera.
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Umbrella
Another great thing to do if you happen to be west of the Washington DC metro area is to visit one of the many wineries in the area. Yes, I said wineries and Virginia has some very good ones. Although they are not as large or "snooty" as some found in California or New York, they are quite good with a uniquely southern flair. For instance, one of...more
If you are ever bored on a Sunday afternoon and the weather is nice, a great thing to do is to take a leisurely drive to Fredrick, Maryland. It is the drive, not the destination, that I want to mention here. Route 15 north until you get to the Potomac River is a beautiful drive with lots do and see along the way once you get through Leesburg....more
Newly-completed Sugarland Run Stream Valley Trail cuts right through the Stuart Woods apartment complex. The wonderfully paved trail is outstanding for biking, roller-blading, or the good old-fashioned walk or jog. It now connects all the way through to the W & OD Trail crossing on Herndon Parkway just north of Spring St.!more
