Water travel is possible between Norfolk and Olde Towne Portsmouth and between Norfolk and downtown Hampton by ferry service. The HRT Elizabeth River Ferry travels from the Waterside Marina to two locations in Olde Towne Portsmouth every half an hour from 7 am - 11:45 pm Mon. - Fri., and 10 am - 11:45 pm Sat. - Sun. One-way fares are $1 for adults, 50 cents for children under 12 and for seniors and disabled persons On our first trip on the Elizabeth River (Intercoastal Waterway) on our boat, the ferry seemed determined to ram us. The operator apparently paid no attention to anything on his route except what was right in front of him. Their website says: "HRT's Elizabeth River Ferry is a system of three 150-passenger paddle-wheel ferry boats, one of which is the world's first natural gas-powered pedestrian ferry. The Ferry travels between North Landing and High Street in Portsmouth and Downtown Norfolk at The Waterside. It's fast, economical and offers a panoram harbor view. The Ferry operates every 30 minutes, with 15-minute service at peak times on weekends. The Ferry is wheelchair accessible and allows boarding passengers to walk on with their bicycles." I thought this little mini-tugboat was REALLY cute. I haven't used the service and don't know how much it costs. The Norfolk website says: "In addition to the Ferry service, Squyres Marine Services, Inc. provides water taxi and launch services from the Norfolk and Portsmouth waterfronts. Hours are Friday and Saturday from 5pm – 1 am. During the peak season and special events, there are expanded hours" The water taxi website (which I am unable to access ATM) said: "Try a new route between downtown Norfolk and Portsmouth! Our professional water taxi is available for commute across the water on a regular basis or by reservation for special event charters. Current hours are Friday and Saturday from 3:00 pm to 1:00 am. Additional hours are available with flexible scheduling" Leave a Comment

HRT runs decent bus service, for the day tourist, but at night you'll have to deal with overpriced cab fare. HRT also runs a Ferry going to Portsmith, VA. Good times are to be had there. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

If you want to take a trip across the river to Portsmouth, or just enjoy splendid views of the Elizabeth River, then take the ferry. It's only a dollar each way (exact change, please). It runs from 10:00 am to 11:30 pm, between Waterside in Norfolk and the Ferry Landing in Portsmouth. Leave a Comment

#1 on the map is Waterside Festival Market (photo 4) developed by James W. Rouse in 1983 (after our time in Norfolk). There is an information center there and they show the movie "Reflections" (admission) on Norfolk history. From here you can take a sightseeing bus to visit the Norfolk Naval Base (photo 2 which shows one of the buildings that was built for the 1906 Jamestown Exposition and is now used as senior officer's quarters), or a hop on/hop off trolley, or a ferry (#6 - photo 5) over to Portsmouth (photo 3) to do their walking tour. On the edge of the park (#18) is Nauticus which is designed to resemble a ship. The battle ship Wisconsin is also here. Or you can visit the Chrysler Museum (#13) or the MacArthur Memorial (#8). by Easty The USS Wisconsin is docked in downtown Norfolk. You can tour an actual battleship. Seeing the battleship gives you the idea of what our Naval servicemen have to live with when they are abroad. Leave a Comment

by Easty It is a nice place to walk and watch boats pass by. You might be lucky enough to see a battleship. Very peaceful area along the Elizabeth River. Leave a Comment Address: Downtown Norfolk

Take the bus tour of the navy base. A city within the city. The bus enters the base and slowly goes past the destroyers, carriers, dry docks and other ships in the port. You also see the officers quarters as well as the enlisted mens barracks. Tour is narrated by navy personnel. Leave a Comment Other Contact: Tour costs $5.00 per person for

Walk along the water front park starting at the USS Wisconson. Sit on a bench and watch the activity in the busy harbor. The park hosts concerts and other activities. Leave a Comment Address: Downtown at the waterfront

You definitely must hit the beaches at one point or another, but that is not my first recommendation. I loved going hiking on the trails and that would be the first thing I'd do. :)
