The 'beginning' of the marked east coast ICW is Hospital Point. The hospital referred to was the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, opposite Norfolk.
There is an anchorage there where boats often wait before starting south. There's also a boat moored near there advertising fuel prices. Since Waterside doesn't sell fuel, a cruiser would have to go to another marina to get fuel.
Tidal range in feet 3.3 and there is room for about 20 boats. When heading south, leave by 5:30 am to beat the bridge restrictions - to either be past the Steel Bridge before 0700 (if doing the Virginia Cut) or to be past the Gilmerton Bridge (for the Dismal Swamp route.
Good ground tackle.
Ground tackle is the anchor and anchor rode. An anchor rode is what attaches the anchor to the boat - chain or rope.
Holding is realtively good, with good protection from wind, but the anchorage is subject to a lot of wakes. At times there are a lot of crab pots to get fouled in your rode or prop.. Leave a Comment Theme: Boating/SailingDirections: To the rest of the channel, anchor in 8-10'.

Waterside, Norfolk is $1.30/foot and $5.00 for electricity. It is $5.25/3 hours to tie up at the floating docks and go to the mall or Nauticus. It is $2/foot on holidays.
They have showers, and you can download email in the office. Bob did the laundry and it was $1.25/machine. They had cable TV, but it didn't work at our slip, and we could get the broadcast channels pretty well with the antenna. They have no fuel for sale, and no pumpout is available.
Sometimes it is quite noisy as it is right by the mall, but that gives you plenty of places to chose from to eat. It is also right next to the Elizabeth River ferry dock.
It is on the East Bank of the ICW at the junction of the Eastern/Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River.
As you approach from the south, downtown's buildings will be visible for several miles.
The Marina entrance is directly below the Bank of America logo.
From the north, tall buildings are also prominent, and the approach landmarks include Lambert's Point coal piers, the Corps of Engineers and the USS Wisconsin Battleship. This place is actually beautiful. Regardless of how well you play, the scenery here is worth the green fees.
Wide open fairways, very few undulations. Some hazards in the way of deep bunkers and sandtraps near the greens and water everywhere (peripheral ro and across the fairways).
Three hours of golf and wait is needed to cover the popular 5200 yards to 6900 yards of this course. Greens fees are $45 for 18-holes and $12 for a cart.
There are driving ranges and putting greens and chipping areas.
There is a pro shop and snack bar. Pool, lockers and showers are for club members only.
This is a private club which allows public access on weekdays and non-tournament weekends when members are not playing. You must call 24 hours in advance to book a tee time. You can even book it online.
