    On Thursday, April 17, Tony and I was driving from Nashville, TN to Ripley WV to see our family for Easter and we were on Rt 23 in Norton, Va and we started up this lovely mountain and found the historical marker and overlook pull off..so we stopped and OMG..I am so glad we did. The views were amazing..and this is what I found out about the area;
    The valley begins between Powell Mountain and Little Stone Mountain where the waters of the Powell River Flow down from the rugged mountains of western Wise County.
    The immense exposed rock face where Stone Mountain and Powell Mountain come together near Grindstone Ridge to the southeast from the overlook, yields a striking visual change in altitude. Within only 0.8 mile the vertical elevation changes by 2,000 feet ( 610 meters ) across the northern face of the Grindstone Ridge Dome of the High Knob Massif, to mark one of the greatest short-distance vertical elevation changes in the southern Appalachians (the greatest found west of the Blue Ridge in Virginia).
    The valley follows the Powell River west towards the Tennessee border.
    Majestic Powell Valley is part of the High Knob Landform, lying literally amid its heart and eroded core, and is a true geologic wonder.

    Flag Rock

    If you come to Norton, you must go to the High Knob Recreation Area. And if you're brave, climb up to flag rock. Unless you're a thin person, you won't make it through the crack you'll have to climb through to pose with the pole, but you'll still get close enough to say you've been there.

    "Trail of the Lonesom Pine Outdoor Drama"

    This play runs June through August of every year. 2003 will be its 40th season.

    The Trail of the Lonesome Pine is a love story. I got to see this play for the first time last summer. Unfortunately, a downpour rained out the very last part of the play, so a tour guide verbally explained the rest of the story. I've got to go back this summer and see it myself. My friend Valerie McQueen played the leading part- June Tolliver. We were all very proud of her. And she sings like an angel. BRAVO, Valerie!
