Grill Kabob by b1bob After a couple days of fast food on the campaign trail, I had the good fortune to run across this place at the Dulles Town Center near my hotel. The guy at the front desk recommended it after my first choice, the hotel restaurant, closed. It was at the food court, but anything beat McDonald's or Subway. I figured that, like most other food court kiosks, this was a national chain, but I was pleasantly surprised on my research that there is only one other: at Springfield Mall about 20 miles (33 km.) away.
I had the chicken kabob with white and brown basmati rice, salad (I asked for it without the creamy white dressing), and a large round of pita bread. This is quite a healthy piece of food court fare and the portions were very plentiful. Edelweiss Restaurant by b1bob Since there are no German restaurants, as of April, 2005 in Richmond, Edelweiss Restaurant is a real treat in the valley. From the outside and the inside it looks like a Bavarian chalet as it should. The chef and head waiter are the owners of the restaurant from the Bavarian region of Germany and Austria.
I never can decide what I want when I go here or to any German restaurant. So, I always get the German Sampler: Sauerbraten (marinated sweet & sour beef roast served with gravy and two potato dumpling), Goulash (beef and pork tips cooked together in a paprika sauce), Schnitzel (pork fillet prepared with spices, breaded and fried), Rahmschnitzel (pork fillets fried and sautéed with mushroom and sour cream sauce) and Jägerschnitzel (pork fillets fried and sautéed with a mushroom and onion gravy). I tell you one thing, you won't leave here hungry if you order the sampler. You might even have to have them sack up your leftovers. Jones and Hawkes Restaurant: Providence Forge by b1bob Jones and Hawke's was the only non-chain restaurant open in the tiny county of New Kent on Sundays at lunch. Because of poor signage and the restaurant being a long distance from the road, it is fairly hard to find. It has the look of a diner. There is a hot food bar for $8.95, a cold food bar for $5.75, taken together $11.95. The waitress was very friendly and attentive.
I had the western omelet with eggs, cheese, ham, onions, and green peppers served together with hash browns and toast. Lee had the all-you-can-eat hot food bar. He mainly chose the Salisbury steak and potatoes. Lee was perfectly satisfied with his food. For me, the omelet was satisfactory, but the hash browns were a little greasy. Overall, it was a satisfactory experience, but nothing to write home about. Arnold's / Memphis Ribs & Diner by b1bob Conveniently located just off Interstate 85 in South Hill, Virginia, Memphis Ribs & Diner is a nice alternative to the many chain restaurants nearby. They specialise in barbecue and ribs, but have many things on the menu. The name may have changed, but the diner atmosphere when it was Arnold's is still evident. For example, an old style jukebox is at the entrance playing old favourites like "Barbara Ann". The interesting thing about the place is being so close to the interstate, you never know whom you may meet. I met a Pearl Harbour survivor who was on his way from Florida up to Washington for the dedication of the World War 2 monument at Memorial Day weekend.
Memphis Ribs & Diner offers a wide range of American foods, offering barbecue, ribs, all manner of soups, salads, sandwiches, breakfast items, and other favourites. I usually get the liver and onions together with the fries. Baja Bean Company by b1bob It was Memorial Day and my friends Tim and Kristin were passing through here at suppertime en route from Ocean Isle, NC to Washington, DC. My first choice (La Casita) was closed on the holiday (I would have thought all restaurants would want to take advantage of all the traffic). However, Baja Bean Company was open, it was even closer than La Casita, and the prices were cheap. Because we were the only ones in the restaurant late that Monday night, Tim and Kristin were wondering what I got them into. It was my first time here too. While it doesn't go as far overboard with the ambience that La Casita and Chevy's in Northern Virginia, the food is still good. There are locations in Richmond, Charlottesville, and Staunton.
I personally enjoyed the combination no. 4, the beef taco and beef burrito which came with baja beans and rice. They could have put a dash of cumin in the baja beans. Tim had some enchiladas and Kristin chimed in with "build your own quesadilla". Leave a Comment

combination 13: El Chapala- Richmond, VA by b1bob El Chapala Restaurante Mexicano has 3 locations throughout Virginia: two in Richmond (northside and west end), one in Tappahannock. My friend and I ate supper at the one on Richmond's northside. I will give El Chapala stellar grades for both ambience and service. The decor was authentic and the Mexican music in the background only added to the ambience. Their menu is long and varied.
However, if I were blindfolded and didn't know I was here, I would have sworn that my friend took me back to El Azteca in Ashland. The food tasted identically mediocre, even down to the guacamole (not announced on the menu and which I don't like) on the tostada. I ordered the combination 13 which consists of one beef taco, one beef tostada, rice, and beans. My friend had the combination 8 which consists of two beef tacos, rice, and beans. In summation, it is much better than the Mexico Restaurant, but nowhere near as good as La Casita. China Garden by b1bob Normally, I would say Chinese isn't my favourite foreign cuisine. However, China Garden in Portsmouth, Virginia finds a way to do it right. Those familiar with my gluttony would find it logical that I would prefer an all-you-can-eat buffet. China Garden is a small, cozy, family-owned restaurant (when my boss and I ate here, we were served by the owner) in downtown Portsmouth on High Street. There are two self-service food bars (with two soup kettles for hot & sour and egg drop soup) as well as a dessert/fruit bar.
The real question here is what NOT to eat. I lean more towards the rice noodles and plenty of egg rolls. At the salad bar, there is a dish of tomatoes and peppers in a sweet vinaigrette which is really good. Mrs. Rowe's by b1bob From the outside, Mrs. Rowe's looks like an old-fashioned family style restaurant. The ambience is fine, the service is decent, and the food was good, but the tone of the menu bothered me a little bit. In the sandwich section, they say no substitutions. I was thinking about ordering the hot turkey sandwich, but it comes with mashed potatoes, which I hate and there are other examples of fine sandwiches that seem to be wed to undesirable side dishes. Also, on steaks, they say not responsible for steaks ordered well done. Who wrote this menu, a grumpy lawyer? Every other restaurant I've been to allowed for substitutions (although some charged a little extra for them) and I have never seen a doneness disclaimer for steaks. If this restaurant were really the old-style restaurant it pretends to be, it would operated based on the customer is always right. In fairness, my server was as good as she could have been, but this is the first time a menu has set the wrong tone for me at a restaurant.
I settled on golden fried shrimp. Two vegetables came with it. I chose turnip greens and pinto beans. I really enjoyed the food, but the terms and conditions of the menu limited my choices. Logan's Diner by b1bob After marching in the Virginia Peanut Festival parade for 3 miles (5 km.) from one end and back to the truck, Lee and I were so hungry we could eat the tyres right off it. Thankfully, Logan's Diner was open when other restaurants were closed for the festival. The scenery was that of a typical lunch counter with good food and friendly conversation. I daresay, he and I were the only non-locals there. We met the owner of the diner as well as a candidate for Virginia House of Delegates. The simplicity of the restaurant added to the charm. The service was outstanding. The sweet tea (which we needed almost as much as the food) kept coming at no extra charge.
It also helped that the food was great. I had a simple hamburger (with lettuce, tomato, and mustard) together with fries with the potato skins left on and a seemingly endless supply of sweet tea. For those traveling up and down I-95, the simple ambience, the good conversation, the great service, and extraordinary food makes Logan's Diner a must-go for Emporia, Virginia. Miller's Bake Shoppe by b1bob Miller's Bake Shoppe, in downtown Stuarts Draft, is run by Mennonites. Everything here is homemade from 15 varieties of bread, 7 or 8 kinds of pies, and many other baked goods.
I rather like their sweet breads. Leave a Comment Theme: BakeryPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than average
