    Awful Arthur's: Awful Arthur's
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Awful Arthur's is a restaurant with three locations in Virginia, two in Roanoke, one in Mechanicsville. The restaurant has the air of being on a ship right down to the hard wooden bench booths. The good thing about the decor is there were ship's lights at every booth. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. However, I had to wait an awfully long time for my food when there wasn't much of a crowd there. The food was well-prepared and fresh and the portions were almost big enough to ask for a takeway box. However, for a comparable price for seafood in Mechanicsville, I'd recommend Calabash.

For an appetiser, I had the crab and artichoke dip which consists of artichoke hearts, crab meat, herbs and spices blended with cream cheese, then oven roasted and paired with warm bread sticks. The bread sticks weren't bad, but the artichoke dip was terrible. All entrees are served with a house salad, hush puppies, vegetable, and your choice of potato or pasta. Good salads at restaurants are hard to find and Awful Arthur's is no exception. It is dominated by dark green lettuce together with the token carrots, cucumbers, and tomato. The hush puppies were great. My only complaint was that there were only two. The vegetable of the day, which the waitress would not volunteer, was green beans. This was the worst lot of green beans I've ever had! Would it have killed them to toss in a little fatback? The fries would have been good if they had not been dominated by seafood seasoning. I had the Awful Platter which consisted of two kinds of seafood; I chose the shrimp and scallops. They are prepared grilled, blackened, broiled or fried. I wanted mine fried. The scallops were great and the shrimp were average (too much breading). To sum up, Awful Arthur's wasn't awful, but the food does need work.

Luca's Italian Restaurant: Italian for breakfast?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Providence Forge, or anywhere in New Kent County, for that matter, isn't the first place that comes to mind when you think of Italian food. Luca's Italian Restaurant doesn't look Italian from the outside despite the red, white, and green sign. In fact, it's a struggle to find it even on Route 60 east. The key landmark to look for is a shopping centre with a Food Lion cattywampus from it. The New Kent Republicans were allocated a portion of the restaurant one Saturday morning when the lieutenant governor and the local delegate were there to speak. Being an Italian restaurant, I was expecting maybe biscotti and coffee for breakfast. However, it was a more americanised buffet-style breakfast which consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage, grits, and breakfast potatoes. With the lieutenant governor and the local delegate as guest speakers, some folks almost had to be turned away because, this time, there was no patio to accommodate the overflow.

I had everything but the scrambled eggs and the fruit salad. Normally, they serve pizza, subs, spaghetti, lasagna, soups, salads, and wings. All their food is prepared on the premises from authentic Italian recipes.

Rose's Crab House and Raw Bar: A tolerable second choice
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Rose's Crab House was our second choice. Lee was so intent on taking Christian and me to Smokin' Joe's Barbecue for lunch. He was angry to find it closed on Sundays. However, he found us a good second choice. When you think of the Northern Neck, you think of seafood, specifically crab. Rose's was decorated with nautical themes, like you find at many nice seafood restaurants. The decor was only slightly overdone. This restaurant has a case of the cutes. On its loo doors, instead of saying ladies and gentlemen they have buoys and gulls. Beam me up! That type of decor could even by material for a stand up comedian. Lee made fun of me all day long for having taken the picture. Aside from that the food was great and the service was attentive. Rose's is a little pricey at supper, but it is very reasonable at lunch.

I had the crab omelet which simply consisted of eggs, cheese, and crab meat. It came together with a type of potato salad which was not prepared with mayonnaise.

Smithfield Confectionary and Ice Cream Parlor: We all scream "ice-cream"
  • Satisfaction:
  • Smithfield Confectionary and Ice Cream Parlor is a top notch ice cream parlor where I had the best ice cream that I ever had on my vacation in the US and that means a lot coming from me since I’m really not an American ice-cream fan but more a Italian ice-cream fan.
The style makes the store very cozy and it seems that you jumped back to the ’50’s, plus the portions are huge…slurp!!!

Oh, you can also order sandwiches if you would like to dine there.

    Virginia Diner: Virginia Diner
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Though the Virginia Diner has become popular for folks who travel along Route 460 from Richmond to Tidewater, the Virginia Diner hasn't let it go to its head. That is, the menu and prices haven't gone upmarket and it retains its small-town diner atmosphere that has served it well since 1929. That shows in the friendly and fast service and in the portions. Since Wakefield is in the heart of peanut country, it isn't that surprising that Virginia Diner would have peanuts for sale in its gift shop.

barbecue & chicken 2 pieces of Southern fried chicken and vinegar-based pulled pork barbecue. I am also keen on their Brunswick stew.

Voted the best outside deck in Richmond, Virginia, Legends Brewhouse does off a spectacular view out over the James River and the Richmond skyline. I had an great opportunity to meet up with VT’s own Hopkid here as we discussed life on the Right Coast of America over some tasty burgers and good beer. The place is a popular place with locals hidden away over in South Richmond.

BISTROT BELGIQUE GOURMANDE IN OCCOQUAN: A VIRTUAL TOURIST FEAST!

Occoquan is a small town with an old history just south of Alexandria and Washington, D.C.. The town has preserved its small historic core as a collection of popular shops and restaurants laid out along the Occoquan River. As can be seen on the edge of town, Occoquan developed as a result of waterpower, lying on the fall line. A new freeway bridge adds a overwhelming sense of unreality to the setting.

What brought me here was the chance to share a meal and a fresh Leffe blonde beer on draft with VT member travelfrosch and his lovely wife, Sara. A great way to end an afternoon of wandering about in the nearby forests of Prince William Forest Park and a chance to have one of Belgium’s great culinary delights - steamed mussels. The restaurant is not very large, but with good weather there is a delightful outside sitting area. The food is good, the beer superb and the company outstanding.

The fresh thrre pounds of Mussels along with the Leffe blonde on draft, of course!

Buster's Steakhouse: Good food in the middle of nowhere
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Lee and I had intended to eat supper at Sheldon's in Keysville. Due to our later than planned departure, we were dodgy on whether we would make Keysville before their 9pm closing. We had just made Amelia by 8. Despite having a late lunch, I was getting hungry, so Lee and I reluctantly postponed Sheldon's until another trip to Southside. Buster's is a steakhouse, bar, and grill on route 360 in Amelia. The service is first-rate and the atmosphere is what you would expect of a roadhouse in rural Virginia.

I had the barbecue sandwich with fries. The barbecue was pretty good in a vinegar based sauce (certainly better than the tomato based sauce from a tin at Buddy's Place down the street), but the fries were a little flat.
