The Downtown Party District: Shockoe Slip/Bottom

In these areas you can find everything you need. There is everything from fine dining to grilled cheese. Shockoe Slip is a little more upscale with cocktail clubs and trendy ever changing bars and restaurants(take note trendy in Richmond is at least 5 years behind New York City). The Bottom has more pubs, live music, and dancing.

Dress Code: Most places have no restrictions on clothes. Use common sense if the doorman is in a suit and you are in a halter top you are probably not going to fit in.

Shockoe Bottom: History, culture and fun

Until recently, prevailing flood waters made restoration of this historic district difficult. The completion of a multi-million dollar flood wall has spurred dramatic redevelopment of this charming neighborhood.

Now one of Richmond's hottest night spots, Shockoe Bottom features some of the area's most sought after restaurants and nightclubs. The neighborhood's most spectacular and most recognizable landmark is Main Street Station.

Dress Code: Towering above its colorful warehouses and 300-year-old farmer's market, Main Street Station was once the first sight rail travelers saw upon entering Richmond. Today it is still one of the city's most impressive sights and plans for the future include reviving rail travel to station.

The 17th Street Farmer's Market is perhaps the oldest in the country. Stop by the market in the summertime for huge ripe watermelons and beefy Hanover tomatoes. During the autumn, shoppers will find rows of multi-colored gourds, jack-o-lantern-perfect pumpkins and festive Indian corn.

    For nightlife, head down to...

For nightlife, head down to Shockhoe Bottom, on the east side of downtown, at the bottom of Shockoe Hill. The neighborhood used to be an old gnarly warehouse district, where Edgar Allen Poe met his final end, but now it's full of clubs and bars. A good time to be had by one and all.
