Meriwether's at the Capitol is the extension of Lynchburg restaurant has taken up shop inside the Virginia capitol in the new underground extension. The Lynchburg based company won the contract for the new wing through an open bidding process. The new capitol canteen offers homemade soups and sandwiches, topped with Virginia grown produce. This is intended to meet the needs of people who have a short lunch break. They have fresh things in air cases that look good and can be taken straightaway. This canteen replaces the beloved Chicken's lunchroom, which was located for many years on the ground level of the Capitol. As Mark and I were touring the capitol on that hot June day (on enlarging the photo, Mark is the gentleman in red at one of the tables), we stopped here for a cold drink. He had an orangeade and I had an iced tea. We could have had a cheap meal here, but we had a relatively late breakfast and I wanted to make his last meal in Virginia something more memourable than standard canteen cuisine.
