Nacho Mama's originally had one location on Cary Street. It is funkier and a little more playful in terms of atmosphere (about right for Carytown) than at most other Mexican restaurants. Now there is a Nacho Mama's Express on the Boulevard which is mainly takeaway. They opened up a third location in Mechanicsville on Bell Creek Road. The walls are yellow and trimmed with chili peppers. The newer locations don't have quite the funky atmosphere of the flagship restaurant in Carytown (putting a funky restaurant in conservative Mechanicsville just doesn't yield the same feel), but the food is better than the average Mexican restaurant in the Richmond area.
Favorite Dish: Last time I went to Nacho Mama's it was at the Mechanicsville location with my friends Lee Mitchell (whom y'all know as gipper84) and our common friend Bill Luu. I put it on Richmond because two on three of these restaurants are in the city. I had the La Panchita combo, consisting of a chicken burrito, a chicken enchilada, and a chicken taco served together with Mexican rice and refried beans. Unlike many local Mexican restaurants, the rice has the right consistency and the refried beans were palatable. Lee and Bill had Mama's Nachos which are fresh tortilla chips with ground beef, Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses, diced onion, tomatoes, lettuce, jalapeños, and black olives. The Cuban Wrap (tender, marinated shredded pork with cheese, tomato, fresh cilantro and lime juice in a garlic-herb tortilla) served with pasta salad is also quite good. For my birthday supper in 2006, I had their chicken fajitas. I wish they came with black beans and rice instead of refried beans.
