by ATXtraveler Much to my surprise, I found Richmond's airport to be a wonderful location. After much anticipation of my trip to Washington, DC and multiple conversations with VT's own B1Bob, I decided to go a little out of my way by flying into the smaller airport of Richmond. After this experience, I may change my DC travel to Richmond all the time! Even while the terminal area was going through some renovation, I was in and out of the gate area in no time flat. There are plenty of restaurants in case you are hungry before your flight. The rental car companies are all located on airport for easy service, and the ticketing system to get your boarding pass is a breeze. As of December 2007, the Richmond Airport services the following airlines: Airtran American Continental Delta JetBlue Northwest Skybus United US Airways Leave a Comment

Richmond International Airport is 10 minutes from downtown. More than 180 domestic flights are made to and from other major cities. There are 6 major carriers and 7 regional passenger airlines. Richmond International Airport was formerly known as Byrd Field. Locals, notorious for being slow to change with the times (and that's not wholly a bad thing- I archived the photo as "byrdairport.jpg"), still refer to it as Byrd Field. Given that Richmond is less than 10 miles (16 km.) from my house, you'd think I would use this as my launching point more often. However, Richmond is not always the cheapest airport out of which to fly. The good thing about RIC is that it is compact and very easy to make your gate in time. As always, allow more time for augmented security scrutiny. Second photo courtesy of "frankcanfly". Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Don't let the name fool you. This airport only has flights to continental US locations and neighboring western hemisphere destinations like, Canada, Mexico, etc... It is quite common that flights into Washington and Baltimore are much less expensive. The airport operates from about 0600 to 2400. There are no "Red Eye" flights into Richmond. free parking deck at Crenshaw Avenue by b1bob In January 1991, the Crenshaw Avenue Parking Deck in Carytown opened. The following April the Colonial Avenue Parking Deck opened a few blocks away. The structures are virtually identical. Each can fit more than 100 cars. Parking is free of charge for up to 3 hours. It was smart to have free parking in Carytown at that time. Thalhimer's downtown had just closed and Miller & Rhoads was fixing to. Carytown was in a position to partially compensate for downtown's decline and parking challenges could have been problematic. Free parking helped spark growth in this village within the city. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Old things die hard in Richmond. This Beaux Arts style stationed opened up in 1901 at a time when railroad travel was at its peak and the elabourate design of train stations was a mark of town pride. It closed in 1975 and stayed closed for 28 years. What were they thinking when they closed Main Street Station in favour of the nondescript Staples Mill Station? Newer isn't always better. As you go into the main reception area, the tiled walls of this hall once had the ticket office. The old safe door is still there. As you go to the main staircase, you will see the high water mark from Hurricane Camille and the sconce lights with the C & O and the Seaboard (railroad) logos. The grand waiting room is framed by 22-foot (6 m.) columns, many of which was destroyed by a fire in 1983. The columns and the glass floors were restored on the grand reopening. The station's concourse leads into the current waiting room and the train platform. The seating is a reproduction of the original benches. The concourse clock was once at the Broad Street Station (where the Science Museum is now). Travelers on I-95 know they're in Richmond when they see this four-faced clock 110 feet (34 m.) above the city. Near Main Street Station is the world's only tri-level railroad track. Main Street Station is a tough customer. It has been through several hurricanes, abandonment, and fire. It deserves to reclaim its slot as Richmond's premier passenger rail station. en español, em português, en français Leave a Comment Theme: Train

Richmond Tours minibus by b1bob In case I'm not around to give you the grand tour Richmond Tours is operated by James River Bus Lines and it offers a 2-hour tour for $23 and a 3-hour tour for $25. (Unit pricing the cost per hour, taking the 3-hour tour would actually give you more bang for the buck.) In the 3-hour tour, they will show you things like Farmer's Market, Tredegar Iron Works, and Hollywood Cemetery. You will tour the Capitol Building, Then see Jackson Ward and Maggie Walker's House. The 2-hour riding tour gives you a chance to see some of Richmond's more prominent historic sites like St. John's Church and Monument Avenue. Both tours begin pickups at these locations: Richmond Visitor Center: 405 N. 3rd Street, Jefferson Hotel: Franklin & Adams Streets, Omni Hotel: Cary and 12th Streets, Civil War Visitor Center: Tredegar Location. The Omni is not a ticket sales location. You need to have already purchased your ticket from there: it is always advisable to prepay your tickets regardless of pickup location in case of any sudden rules change. The 3-hour tour begins pickups at 9:15 and the 2-hour tours start pickups at 1:30pm at these same locations. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

The Martin Luther King Memorial Bridge is a 6-lane bridge connecting downtown to East Richmond. Its structural design is like that of a future envisaged in the mid 1970s when it was built. The King Bridge rises 100 feet (30 m.) over Interstate 95 and the Shockoe Valley. Unlike most bridges of this length (more than 2000 ft., 610 m.) also has sidewalks on each side for pedestrians. The Lee Bridge, the newest bridge downtown, replaced the old Lee Bridge. The new bridge has a pedestrian bridge suspended under it to Belle Island and it offers panoramic views of the Richmond skyline and cityscape. Mayo Bridge (or the 14th St. Bridge) is a four-lane structure, it transports Route 360 across the James River. The bridge comes in two sections, separated in the middle by Mayo Island. The total length is 1374 feet (419 m.). The bridge as it looks now was built in 1913 for streetcar traffic. It is Richmond's oldest highway bridge across the James River. It was built on the site of the city's first bridge completed in 1788 by John Mayo Jr., the grandson of the man who first laid out Richmond's grid pattern. Rising just 30 feet (9 m.) above the water line, the Mayo Bridge is currently Richmond's only bridge vulnerable to flooding. Of all the bridges in Richmond, I use this one the most often taking Route 360 to get to Southside Virginia. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

overpass on the Downtown Expressway by b1bob Richmond's Downtown Expressway opened in 1976 and it made getting to Southside much quicker and more convenient. Before it opened, motorists had to suffer through seemingly infinite traffic lights driving through downtown. The Downtown Expressway passes south of Richmond's central business district and north of the James River. From Downtown Express, you can get a good view of Richmond's skyline. parking by b1bob Even those new to the area will find getting around Richmond easier than most places. True, or mass transport is almost nonexistent, however except for some weekday rush hour delays, traffic is fairly light and parking is better than most places. It might be easier to travel around the West End with the new Route 288 which connects Southside to West End and Goochland. Here are a few miscellaneous tips I hope you will find helpful: - Right turns are allowed on red unless posted otherwise. - Left turns on red are only allowed from a one-way street onto another, unless otherwise noted. - With the exception of Broad Street, downtown streets are generally one-way. - Tolls from 20¢ to $2 are found on Downtown Expressway, Powhite Parkway, and Pocohantas Parkway. - Many parking lots are dispersed throughout the city for prices from less than $1 to $6 per hour.
