the site of chimborazo confederate hospital is located on chimborazo hill in the church hill district of richmond. originally chimborazo hill was the site of over 100 wooden barracks for training of confederate soldiers in preparation for the civil war. after the troops left for the front dr. samuel moore converted the barracks into hospital wards. the chimborazo hospital was the largest and most sophisticated in the confederacy. during the civil war over 75,000 patients were treated at chimborazo hospital. today on the site of chimborazo hospital is the museum of civil war medicine. this interesting museum has an excellent collection of medical related civil war relics.
This museum is where the famous Chimborazo Hospital once was. Between 1861-65, thousands of Confederate soldiers were treated here. The Medical Museum tells the story of the patients, hospital, and doctors who worked there. I went here during a 7th grade school field trip (1981) and it was eye-opening to learn how much medicine had advanced in the 120 intervening years.
