Much to my surprise, I found Richmond's airport to be a wonderful location. After much anticipation of my trip to Washington, DC and multiple conversations with VT's own B1Bob, I decided to go a little out of my way by flying into the smaller airport of Richmond. After this experience, I may change my DC travel to Richmond all the time! Even while the terminal area was going through some renovation, I was in and out of the gate area in no time flat.
There are plenty of restaurants in case you are hungry before your flight. The rental car companies are all located on airport for easy service, and the ticketing system to get your boarding pass is a breeze.
As of December 2007, the Richmond Airport services the following airlines:
Airtran
American
Continental
Delta
JetBlue
Northwest
Skybus
United
US Airways

Richmond International Airport is 10 minutes from downtown. More than 180 domestic flights are made to and from other major cities. There are 6 major carriers and 7 regional passenger airlines. Richmond International Airport was formerly known as Byrd Field. Locals, notorious for being slow to change with the times (and that's not wholly a bad thing- I archived the photo as "byrdairport.jpg"), still refer to it as Byrd Field. Given that Richmond is less than 10 miles (16 km.) from my house, you'd think I would use this as my launching point more often. However, Richmond is not always the cheapest airport out of which to fly. The good thing about RIC is that it is compact and very easy to make your gate in time. As always, allow more time for augmented security scrutiny. Second photo courtesy of "frankcanfly".

Don't let the name fool you. This airport only has flights to continental US locations and neighboring western hemisphere destinations like, Canada, Mexico, etc... It is quite common that flights into Washington and Baltimore are much less expensive. The airport operates from about 0600 to 2400. There are no "Red Eye" flights into Richmond.
