Uncle Buck's: Our local Bos
This is our local Boswell Alley. Cheap beer. Good food. Squabbling yet friendly waitstaff, if a bit on the slow side. Buck's nephew (co-owner) is often around and frequently a bit on the tipsy side. Sit at the bar.
And by the way-- there's no such thing as a smoking section. It's all smoking. :-)
Favorite Dish: Fish basket, hand down.
Bunker Winery: What would you expect?
The back label on the gallon jugs of wine we make here at the Bunker reads:
BUNKER WINERY makes country-style fruit wines and old-timey smoked meats, sausages, and desserts. We are located at the northern tip of Page Valley in Virginia, nestled right on the Shenandoah River between the Blue Ridge Mountains to our east and the Massanutten Mountains to our west. Our recipes and winemaking techniques come down from Czech immigrants to Texas in the early 1900s. Our wines are made from simple and pure ingredients: juiced fruits, sugar, yeast, and water. They contain no preservatives so keep them refrigerated and enjoy them cold.
Favorite Dish: Page Valley Peach. From the label:
PAGE VALLEY PEACH refers to the verdant strip of land, less than fifteen miles wide, that separates peaks of the Massanutten and the Blue Ridge. This pale wine is pure peach taste and aroma over a hint of white grape. Ideal for summer!
Other wines include River Road Raspberry, Caverns Cherry Mead, Massenutten Red, Blue Ridge Blueberry, and more.
We currently (4/26) have 11 gallons fermenting, and several more in various phases of filtering/aging.
UPDATE MAY 22: Favorite is now Caverns Cherry Mead.

Mimslyn Inn: Grand old country inn
UPDATE 4/26: The Mimslyn has been closed since January for renovation. Supposedly it will reopen in July. Cross your fingers.
From the Mimslyn web site: "Our elegant Main Dining Room has fan-shaped windows and
antique chandeliers. It is a lovely setting for an intimate dinner or dinner party."
Sunday brunch-- tons of food, great service, no need to rush. Old timey elegance of a certain sort.
Favorite Dish: Brunch.
John's Outdoor Kitchen #2: Come hungry
John does virtually all of the cooking & much of it is grilling! He easily accomodates vegitarians, but maybe best to let us know you are one so we can plan and shop accordingly (the nearest full grocery is about 10 minutes away).
FOOD: Expect home-cooked Southern food with a splash of Tex-Mex-Czech flavor, and lots of it! John has worked on the Big Food Manual all winter. It now contains over 1000 recipes.
ALCOHOL: yes, please. We try to keep the bar stocked but beer contributions are nice (the nearest stop-n-rob is too far for a B-double E-double R-U-N). Fortunately, Bunker Winery is now in full operation and we keep on hand 2-3 gallons of home made wine.
See the "What would you expect" tip for more informaiton on Bunker Winery.
Favorite Dish: Anything on the water smoker.

Mindi's: Not open on Monday
Mindi's (in Luray) is the classic local Mexican place owned by someone not at all Mexican. But the food is good and the beer is cheap.
