    Roanoke Airport

by mikelisaanna Updated Jan 4, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Roanoke has a good modern airport for a city its size. The airport is located a few miles north of downtown Roanoke just off of Interstate 581. Airlines which serve Roanoke's airport include Delta, United, USAir, and Allegiant. Cities to which you can get direct flights include Charlotte, Atlanta, Orlando, Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, and Detroit.

The Roanoke Airport is very user-friendly, with only about 6 gates and long-term parking within 100m of the terminal. One issue is that the security lines can get backed up to 30 minutes or more in the 5:30-7AM busy period or when an Allegiant flight is going out.

There are two places to get food - one each inside and outside of security. There are also two newsstands. Rental cars are available from Hertz, Avis, National, and Budget. There is also a taxi desk if you need a taxi to get into town.

    by LilBearsm0ma Written Jun 14, 2004

If you decide to give old YELLOW CAB A call (540-345-7711) or LIBERTY CAB (540-344-1776) make sure to NOT LET ON YOUR A TOURIST or they (The drivers) will take you for a run for your money. As in Taking you the Looooong way around to your destianation.

If your in a hurry don't be Yellow or Liberty cab don't get in a hurry. If its a weekend you mind as well WALK!

(I worked at both, so I should know! Shhh)

If you decide to take our local buses which are called, "Valley Metro" they will cost everyone from the age 5 and up to 65 $1.25 per ride, but you can ask for a transfer if you need another bus.

If your a senior citzen they do offer cheaper rates.

    Walking around town

Downtown Roanoke is compact enough to walk around and see all the major sights in a day. Stroll around the farmers market and visit the friendly museums

If you've got a car drive up the mountain to the Zoo or to go look at the 50ft star that's illuminated at night

    Roanoke is best accessed by...

Roanoke is best accessed by car.
Generally, make use of your car, but in the downtown area, stash your car in one of Roanoke's public parking garages and explore downtown by foot.
