You have to see the lake by boat! You can rent Waverunners, skiffs, runabouts, pontoon boats, even a houseboat!!

Smith Mountain Lake State Park Warnings and Dangers

  • by steelmillsteve Written Oct 16, 2007

This is the only public beach on the lake. Lifeguards enforce strict and sometimes ridiculous rules. No floatation devices past first rope which is sometimes only waist high and rarely more than chest high on avereage person 5'10" tall. Adults should be allowed past first rope with floatation devices. There is an extension to the beach with a grove of trees for privacy and shade, but this section is closed except for the busiest weekends.Three lifeguards sit in one tower, one could be watching this section of beach instead. Water is warm by mid July and stays that way through September.
