Not really an off the beaten path, but a good alternative to the $15 Skyline drive park fee if all you want to do is admire the views. We weren't going to be able to do anything else in the park on this trip, and $15 was a little steep for us to just take a drive and see some vistas, so we opted for the Blue Ridge Parkway, which continues south where Skyline Drive ends, at Rt 64. Pavillions and picnic areas had grills for cooking. There were full restroom facilities with handicap access. The park has kids' playgrounds and a medium size swimming pool.
On a hot summer day, come over and relax.
