Staunton is just below the average crime stats for American cities of similar size.
They normally have no murders and few rapes, but burglaries and thefts are not uncommon.
Although most tourists will find Staunton a pleasant enough vacation spot, there are 85 registered sex offenders that families with children should be mindful of.
(If you want to know specifics of who and where these SOs are, then use the website below.)

So: lock your car doors; lock and latch your motel room; know who is around you especially if you are in unfamiliar places and at late hours; don't act like a tourist and you will less likely be targeted.

This information is meant to give you means to have a safe visit in Staunton.

Driving around downtown can be particularly rough. Downtown Staunton is a maze of narrow one-way streets, and as such is quite hard to navigate if you don't know exactly where you're going and how to get there. If you don't know exactly where to turn, you'll be going in circles, trust me.
