  • Varina-Enon Bridge - Virginia
    Varina-Enon Bridge
    by b1bob
The Varina-Enon bridge links Chesterfield County with Henrico County (southeast of Richmond), spanning 4680 feet (1427 m.) in length and the towers rise 300 feet (91 m.) above the river making it the highest bridge in the Richmond area. If you visit any of the suburbs east of Richmond and want to avoid the interstate traffic through downtown, getting of I-95 at exit 61 (Route 10 East- East Hundred Road), getting on I-295 north (towards Washingtongton, DC) will take you across this bridge.

Washington-Dulles Airport, located in Sterling (Loudoun County), Virginia offers many types of shuttles (usually buses).

Enlarge the photo and you will see the mobile lounge on the top which raises and lowers hydraulically to the aircraft door and to the terminal gateway running on oversized tyres.

Second, there is the parking shuttle which just takes passengers from the distant parking decks to the main airport terminal. You can take this shuttle or an underground path with moving sidewalks.

Third, various car hires have shuttles between the terminal and the lot from which you hire your car or turn it back in. Pictured is the Budget shuttle which Matt and Urszula used on turning in their hired car which went 6500 miles (10500 km.).

Not included in the picture are hotel shuttles (covered in Arlington) and in-town or between airport shuttles.

    Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

  • Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel - Virginia
    Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel
    by b1bob
Opened in April, 1964, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is considered a modern engineering model. It spans 17.6 miles (28.4 km.) from Cape Charles (Virginia's Eastern Shore) to Virginia Beach and Norfolk. It was originally going to only be a bridge, but the U.S. Navy had its concerns. They were worried that any sabotage on the bridge and associated debris could trap a significant portion of the naval fleet- even making them targets. So, they built two deep tunnels to accommodate the navy and other deep hulled ships. There are also elevated trestle bridges under which to allow small and medium-sized craft. The sections of the bridge tunnel pass on 4 manmade islands (some of which also act as bird sanctuaries- there are places for people to safely pull over and watch birds). At Seagull Island, the southernmost of the manmade island, includes a restaurant, a gift shop, and a fishing pier. Due to the very size of the bridge tunnel, there is constant inspection and maintenance. In the mid 1990s they built a twin span to accommodate increasing traffic. The toll of $10 is the highest bridge toll in the country, but when you consider how much one would pay in petrol and lost time going the roundabout way (from Delaware to Hampton, VA, for example), $10 seems like a bargain.

  • Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel - Virginia
    Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel
    by b1bob
The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel connects the cities of Hampton and Norfolk from Old point Comfort to the Willoughby Spit. The total bridge-tunnel complex spans 3.5 miles (5.8 km.). The twin tunnels (the first one- now westbound- was built in November, 1957; the second one built in May, 1976) are about 1.5 miles (2.5 km.) long and reach a depth of 108 feet (33 m.) In all tunnels, expect the unexpected. The Virginia Department of transport forbids petrol tankers and other trucks delivering hazardous material from using the tunnel. On 31 July 1982, my family and I were on our way back from the Outer Banks and someone A COUPLE OF SEEDS SHORT OF A WATERMELON (not real smart) overturned his boat, backing up traffic for miles. Even worse than that, my folks had bran muffins and coffee an hour and a half earlier at breakfast. The wait was sheer agony for them. Needless to say, after the blockage was cleared, we went at warp speed to the nearest garage (Mercury Boulevard in Hampton) to alleviate the aforesaid problem. To avoid that, a local radio station (AM 610) is dedicated to nothing but tunnel traffic alerts. The series of tunnels in the Tidewater Area played a key role in deciding which naval base (between Norfolk and Charleston, South Carolina) would be closed in the mid 1990's. Charleston has a series of drawbridges, which could easily be sabotaged and trap our fleet. The network of tunnels allow for unencumbered passage for naval and large commercial vessels.

  • Shuttle Bus 5A: from Dulles Airport to Washington - Virginia
    Shuttle Bus 5A: from Dulles
    Airport to Washington
    by b1bob
If you're going into the city and are not too overburdened by luggage, the best and cheapest option into town some 20 miles (33 km.) away is to take Metro Bus 5A which goes to L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station with an intermediate stop at Rosslyn. I took this special shuttle in mid-November, 2004. I hated to say goodbye to Matt and Urszula, but it was downright brutally cold and wet even underneath that canopy. The fare was a flat $3 plus your metro rail fare from L'Enfant or Rosslyn forward. This differs from most Metro bus routes because of the higher fare (nearly treble a normal fare) and limited number of stops. I put it on Virginia because the majority of the ground covered is in that commonwealth- from Sterling to Arlington to just across the river in Washington.

    The Mixing Bowl

  • the dreaded mixing bowl - Virginia
    the dreaded mixing bowl
    by b1bob
For those of y'all from the Champs Elysees or Roxboro, North Carolina, the mixing bowl isn't some fancy cooking supply store found in some snooty big city mall, it is a confusing string of highway in Springfield, Virginia where I-95, 395, and 495 come together. Joan, who has lived in the area for 16 years, confirms what I have long suspected. It is a mess because of the construction. By the time they finish it, it will of course be outdated. There is just too much traffic. Going through the interchange is not bad in the middle of the day from around 9:30am to 3:30 pm And on Saturday and Sunday there is no problem at all.

If you're coming from the south and want to get to Dulles without worrying with the nightmare of the mixing bowl, get off I-95 at exit 160 (Route 123 west), go on that for another 14 miles, turn left onto route 29 west, turn right onto route 50, turn right onto route 28 (Sully Road), and get off on the Dulles Airport exit. It may be longer in terms of miles, but it will be quicker in case of heavy traffic.

Our trip to Virginia was short, and we had to take in as much as we could in this short time. I would say prices are very moderate (especially compared to Hawaii!) but along the Parkway, the giftshops are rather high, though average for that sort of thing. In a hurry, with too little time to see so much . . . travel via rental car! Got more time on your hands, my suggestion is to bike it.

Located about six miles (ten kilometers) north of downtown Norfolk, Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is the main gateway to southeast Virginia, the lower Chesapeake Bay area, Colonial Williamsburg, and the barrier islands of Virginia and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There are no international flights into the airport, so anyone arriving from another country or continent would have to arrive at a major international hub before making a connecting flight to Norfolk.

Airlines serving Norfolk International Airport: American Airlines, American Eagle, Continental Airlines, Continental Express, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Northwest Airlines, Northwest Airlink, Southwest Airlines, United Express, US Airways, and US Airways Express.

The international airport of Richmond, VA is the smallest I have ever been. There are just two stores and two cafés and one restaurant. I bought a lot of postcards at the souvenir shop but I couldn't send them as they do not sell stamps and in the aiport is not even a mailbox.
However, the view from the airport restaurant is excellent. Prices for food and drinks are below average.

As I already stated I do NOT recommend driving in Northern Virginia. Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) runs efficient system of transportation both by metro and by scheduled buses called metro buses. The one system covers Washington DC and adjacent areas of Maryland and Northern Virginia including Arlington, Springfield, Alexandria and Fairfax County.

The five metro lines are named and marked by the following colours: Blue, Green, Orange, Red and Yellow. Look at the map of metro system here. Transfer stations are marked on Metro maps with a double black circle. The stations are always marked on all maps.

Details on how to use the metro + metrobus system are put in my transportation tips on my Washington, DC page.
