When I first saw a picture of this bridge before going there I said there was no way I would be travelling on it. I dont like bridges, especially over water. But when I saw it, although still not too keen knew that I had to do it. What a magnificent piece of engineering it is. Its over 17 miles long, and connects Virginia Beach to Virginia's eastern shore, saving many miles as opposed to going all the way around.

    Old Cape Henry Lighthouse
    by bugalugs
This lighthouse was built in 179. It is now owned and maintained by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA) which was founded in 1889 to save Virginias historic sites. The lights were damaged by Confederate troops but later repaired by Union troops.
At the bottom of the lighthouse is a shop where you gain entrance to the lighthouse.
A fee for admission is charged. On the day we were there it was so hot and I could not be tempted to climb the winding staircase to the top.

Virginia Beach while at times extremely crowded is a very clean beach. Stretching from Rudee Inlet on the south end of the resort area up to 40th Street is the resort area of Virginia Beach. Lifeguards are on duty from mid-May to mid September 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
While they are willing to answer your questions about safety and the beach they do not like to be distracted form the very important job they have. Each day we were there the beach would have loads of people coming to it. Families were as much a part of the scene as teens and elderly. Paying attention to the large signs posted at the beach access points helps everyone stay safe.
You can help to protect your health while swimming by taking these simple steps:

Observe Swimming Advisories and do not enter the water at a beach under an advisory
Swim well away from fishing piers, pipes and drains, as well as water flowing from storm drains onto a beach
Do not dispose of trash, pet waste, or dirty diapers on a beach

While there are permanent restooms at 17th, 24th, and 30th Streets off the boardwalk there are not changing areas. Foot showers are available along the oceanfront to get all that sand off your favorite flip flops.
Be sure to bring water with you and have plenty of waterproof sunscreen on hand.
You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas at various places along the boardwalk.

    The Old Coast Guard
    Station

This is an actual Coast Guard station that was built in 1903 and was moved to its current spot on Virginia Beach. It is registered as a Virginia landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum has two floors and charges a small fee to enter the actual museum while you can visit the gift shop for free. It is interesting and I think worth a look if you are in the area of Hampton Roads at all. Our tour guide Stanley was very knowledgable and gave us all a non boring lesson in nautical history. The whole bottom floor is dedicated to life-saving. Exhibits show rescue equipment and methods. One of which is the life-saving breeches buoy. Yikes! How scary is that?
The second floor is filled with tales of shipwrecks that have happened along the Virginia coastline and a really great tower cam that you can control with the touch of a button to check out the surf or the current beach action.

The Haunted Fun House is located on 26th street and oceanfront. It also has a big arcade inside for the kids.

Inside the many different discount booklets at the beachfront area, you can find discount tickets for admission.

This is a favorite, but be warned they use live actors and you might get grabbed.

Rudee Inlet is at the southern end of Atlantic Avenue. From here you can go on fishing trips, jet ski, kayaks, jet boats, or if you prefer to relax sit in a restaurant and watch everyone else doing it!

Another fine example and the art work around Virginia Beach. This sand castle is one of Terry's favorites. The kids can play with this one an not wreck it!
