The shop on the bridge is open all year round.
    Mid September - Mid May 7am - 6pm

You can fish from the fishing pier 24 hours and there are restrooms, fish cleaning stations, and weighting stations.

You can see on the map the interstate 13 going across the sea is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

The bridge I assume was built with part tunnels to allow the many ships to pass through. There are battle ships, nuclear submarines, aircraft carriers, cruise and cargo ships that pass through here daily. There are plaques describing the ships and their names. This channel is called the Thimble Shoal Channel.

The bridge was opened in 1964 and consists of part bridge and part tunnels. There is a shop, cafe and also fishing piers on the bridge.
The price for one way is $12 but you can return within 24 hours (showing your one way ticket) for another $5 which is what we did.

    Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

When I first saw a picture of this bridge before going there I said there was no way I would be travelling on it. I dont like bridges, especially over water. But when I saw it, although still not too keen knew that I had to do it. What a magnificent piece of engineering it is. Its over 17 miles long, and connects Virginia Beach to Virginia's eastern shore, saving many miles as opposed to going all the way around.

    Chesapeake Bay Bridge

A modern engineering wonder on US 13 spanning 17.6 miles across the Chesapeake Bay. Both a tourist attraction and travel convenience, the Bridge-Tunnel saves motorists time and mileage between Virginia Beach/Norfolk and New York. Fishing pier, gift shop and restaurant located on the South Island. There is a $10 charge to cross the bridge and a 24-hour round-trip toll rate is available.

It’s particularly interesting for me as the company I work for built the new addition to the bridge.
