West Point Warnings and Dangers

The Northern Neck has a surprisingly large number of smelly factories for an area that is so rural. There's the menhaden plant in Reedville, and this pulp paper mill in West Point.

Stone Container Corporation's pulp and paper plant in West Point, Virginia has agreed to pay a $950,000 penalty and to install pollution control equipment to resolve alleged violations of the federal Clean Air Act and Virginia's Air Pollution Control Law specifically several regulations designed to limit emissions of sulfur dioxide.

That may be what I smell that I think is like cabbage. I first noticed in in Georgetown SC.

Because there are two old bridges along the main road in or out of town, some reconstruction needed to be done. The construction, which includes traffic delays and lane closures will continue through October 2006.

    Current projects are:
•Complete forming and pour Pier 10 footer
•Drive piles for Pier 12 and form and pour footer
    •Forming and tieing re-steel for Pier 11 & 10 columns
•Filling at Chelsea Road Relocated and Mainline
•Set beams for West Point Creek Bridge
•Drive Test Piles for Abut. B B601 and ground improvements on east side of new bridge
•Drive temporary sheet piling on south side of existing Rte. 33 on the Town side
•Continue with the relocation of sewer and water lines
•Start putting trestle in place for the construction of Piers 18 thru 27 on the K & Q side

West Point Favorites

Favorite thing: This photograph shows two of the three main facets of West Point - the paper mill and the river access.

The logs are brought in on the east (right) side of the road and chipped, and then conveyed across Route 33 to the pulp mill on the west side. The conveyor looks like a giant pipe which is visible past the bridge superstructure in the photo. I suppose it is enclosed to keep from dropping chips on the road.

The tugs and barges have to get to the plant on the west side (see photos in the Intro) so there is a swing bridge to let them through. The bridgetender's house is up in the top of the bridge.
