This live venue is big with a capacity of about 1300 people, standing only. It has great acoustics and lights but the beer was expensive at $7 (ouch!)
We had booked our tickets to see the Canadian band OF MONTREAL one month before for $25.
The concert was sold out and the venue was full of people even up to upper balconies. The doors opened at 19.00 and as you can guess the headliners start at 9:30 of course :)
Before OF MONTREAL we enjoyed the support act which was JANELLE MONAE, a great energetic show that people seemed to like even more than the headliners! Check one video from the concert here.
The area in front of the stage was full of die hard fans but the balconies (where we stayed for a while) was full of people that were lazy, you know “lets a drink something and get out of here” type :)

Some of the best bands around come through this place. They have a good website that lists all upcoming shows.
Dress Code: Anything goes...there was a guy draped in a Scottish St. Andrews flag for the Snow Patrol concert.

The 9:30 Club is an awesome place to see a band perform. The club is small enough that you can see the action even if you are way in the back, but big enough to get a great, energetic vibe going with a pumped up crowd.
There is a an open floor section, no seats, and two levels of balcony seating. My personal opinion is that the best view is from the top balcony section by the third level bar. Speaking of the bars, for a small club like this they really serve some great beers here. Sure you can get your bud and your amstel light, but you can also get a Cherry Lambic or a Chimay ($11!). Beer prices range from $4 a beer and up. They also have a kitchen for all your club cravings.
But I digress, this place is all about the music. This club hosts big names (Marylin Manson) smaller names (Dogs Die in Hot Cars) and names I'm ashamed I went to the 9:30 Club to go see (Howie Day). haha. Sorry to any Howie Day fans out there, but it just wasn't my style. You know you're at the wrong show when the majority of the fans in the audience are being chaperoned by their parents.
All in all the place is funky and fun. (The restroom doors have Barbie and Ken dolls in glass boxes to note men's or ladie's room). Oh, and I my last trip there I discovered that there is a basement level bar right below the club level. Dark, smokey, and great place to have drunken conversation.
Dress Code: I guess it depends on who you're going to see play there. Pretty much anything goes - it's a club. I can't imagine a situation where you would be out of place in jeans and a T-shirt.

The 9:30 club is one of the best places to go if you are looking to see some great live bands. They showcase an extremely diverse group of performers ranging from G. love to Mos Def. They are located at 815 v st. in N.W. Washington D.C. at the intersection of 9th, V, and vermont st. Check out their website for all upcomming events.
Dress Code: The dress code may vary depending on that evenings event. For the most part, there is no strick dress code, however backpack are not allowed and all purses ( and people for that matter) will be searched.

Q: Does anyone know the best time to see the cherry blossoms this year in Washington? Thanks, Justin

A: depends on weather. Late March through to mid April would be about right, if my memory is good today
