I read about 1-hour FBI tour on VT a few years before my trip to Washington, DC. Certainly I wanted to join this tour and see how the guys work in FBI (the Federal Bureau of Investigation). I've watched them many times in numerous movies and on TV. Well, I am disappointed because, let mi citate: "FBI Tours is undergoing extensive renovations and is closed until further notice."

So, instead of joining the tour I could only walk around and take pictures of the famous J. Edgar Hoover Building. Well, a policeman who stood in front of the Department of Justice entrance, on the corner of Pennsylvania Ave, and 9th St. asked us not to stay too long with a camera pointed at one place. Well, the whole area around is monitored by spy cameras. No wonder, this building has been playing the key role in fighting terrorism since September 11, 2001. FBI is headed by the Director appointed by President and approved by Congress. His term has been limited to 10 years since 1976.

The 1-hour tour includes crime laboratories, history exhibit and a live firearms demonstration.

the federal bureau of investigation was established in 1908 as a national police force to enforce federal laws. the f.b.i. became famous under the leadership of j. edgar hoover in the 1920's and 1930's. the current building's construction began in 1964 and was dedicated in 1975. the f.b.i. building offers a very interesting tour with exhibits on the history of the f.b.i. and a collection of crime related relics. a worth while place to visit when in washington.

Despite my Washington friend laughing,when I said I wanted to come here,I made the visit anyway and when I acctually found my way into the original looking building,the tour (which is free) was very interesting..giving run down of crime history in America through a series of sets and glass cabinets.The things that might be more compelling are the DNA lab and a glass fronted room that supposedly contained every kind of gun in the world.
Be sure to check out the 10 most wanted criminals as well (quite erily one whilst I was visiting on 10Sep was Osama Bin laden)
Its worth a visit especially if youre planning to do the Ford Theatre nearby

Free tours are normally conducted here but at the moment it is closed for renovation.

It was here that J. Edgar Hoover was director of the FBI for 48 years from 1924-1972.

A free visit of near 1:15. A comment by an agent on the different fields on which the FBI is competent and on some famous affaires. Then a demonstration of sharp shooting (revolver and machine gun). The agent never misses the target. And he explains to the children, it is dangerous to touch a weapon.
I asked him how many fire weapons are registred for private persons. He answered he has personaly 6 arms and only one is registred because it is not compulsory. Consequently, he ignored how many fire arms are owned by private citizens. It means some million ....

The J. Edgar Hoover Building is the headquarters for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The building, named for former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. The FBI building is not open to the public, as guided tours of the building were discontinued in 1999 according to Wikipedia. However according to its web site tours go every 15 minutes. Since 1908, when the Bureau was still the Justice Department Bureau of Investigation, the FBI had been headquartered in the Department of Justice building. In April 1962, Congress approved the construction of a separate building for the FBI. The General Services Administration allocated funding for the project, and design began. The GSA appointed Berswenger, Hoch, Arnold, and Associates for engineering, and Charles F. Murphy and Associates as architects. The design was finalized in 1964, and construction began on December 6, 1967. The naming was authorized by President Richard Nixon on May 4, 1972, two days after Hoover's death. Employees began moving into the facility on June 28, 1974, and the last employees moved in by June 1977. President Gerald Ford officially dedicated the building on September 30, 1975. The tour of the J Edgar Hoover FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) Building is one of the most enthralling tourist attractions that Washington DC has to offer. Along the tour, visitors may learn about the FBI's history and work against organised crime and terrorism, see FBI scientists at work in the forensic labs and watch a firearms demonstration given by a special agent. Tours depart every fifteen minutes and admission is free.

This is one of my favorites! They give you a tour of the place, which is really fascinating. Then it ends with a shooting demonstration. They also have a gift shop if your interested. If you have little kids who are afraid of guns, I wouldn't bring them on this tour.
Tip*** When they are finished with the shooting demonstration, the first person who asks for the target, can keep it.

Headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the J Edgar Hoover Building is named after the former Director of the FBI, J Edgar Hoover. It was named through Public Law 92-520, which was signed by President Richard Nixon on 4 May 1972, just two days after the Director's death.

Tours to the J Edgar Hoover Building are currently suspended.

The FBI announced that the tours offered to the public at the FBI's J. Edgar Hoover Headquarters building, Washington, D.C., were canceled for an indefinite period. The cancellation of public tours was intended to enable FBI personnel to complete security enhancements initiated as a result of unconfirmed threats to the FBI Headquarters building.
