FDR Memorial Reviews | 1 - 10 of 40 | | Franklin Delano Roosevelt was our 32nd President of the United States of America that served three terms from 1933 - 1945. He believed and wanted us Americans to have, cherish, and live the four freedoms. " Freedom of Speech", "Freedom of Worship", Freedom from Want", and Freedom from Fear". This is one of my favorite memorials and its broken down into four rooms that represents 4 terms of his 12 years of his presidency. For quite sometime, Roosevelt tried to keep his disablity as much from the public eye. Yet, to me he represented to all folks with disabilites that you can become anything you strive for, even president, he was a spokesman without evening really knowing it! I couldn't get over all the beautiful waterfalls and meaningful phrases carved into the rock every where. You need to pay close attention to all the rocks, floors, walls. The scuptures in this facility are so wonderful too. Very awe inspiring! The main part of the memorial remains open 24 hours a day. The Interpretive Ranger staff, are on site from 8am to 11:45pm daily except Christmas Day. The Bookstore opens from 8 am to 5 pm. All restroom facilities close at 11:30 pm. Open All Year Closures December 25th. Available Facilities Restrooms available at Memorial entrance and exit. This monument for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President, covers 7 1/2 acres and features waterfalls, four outdoor galleries symbolizing each term of his Presidency, 10 bronze sculptures including one depicting his fireside chats, one with his little dog Fala and one of his wife Eleanor Roosevelt, the first statue of a first lady. Also, engraved on the granite connecting the galleries are many of his famous quotes. Curiously, none of the statues depict FDR in a wheelchair which he used during his entire presidency having contracted polio in 1921. There's discussion of this at : NPS The Memorial was designed by Lawrence Halprin and was unveiled in 1997. I stopped by this memorial on my walk from Arlington Cemetery to the Jefferson Memorial via the Lincoln Memorial and Korean War Memorial. It's fairly well marked. This memorial takes quite some space, like a park. I visited it in the evening so by the time I finished walking around, it got quite dark (excuse the quality of the picture). At first I thought it was nothing special, but as I went along discovering more of it, I was stunned by the design and the overall message coming across. The FDR Memorial consists of 4 large open-air chambers, each one being devoted to one term of Roosevelt's office. They are arranged in sequence so as you walk along, you're taken through 12 years of American history. You see interesting sculptures which portray that era, and you can read various quotes from Roosevelt's addresses. So in fact this is a memorial to the whole era that FDR represents. I'd say it is quite an involving experience to see it all! The sculpture in this picture portrays Roosevelt in a large cape that covers his wheelchair. Of course, at his feet is his beloved Scotch terrier, Fala. For more pictures go to this travelogue. The FDR memorial was dedicated in May 1997. Located near the National Mall, on the Western side of the Tidal Basin, along the Cherry Tree Walk. Gosia and I visited the Roosevelt Memorial of an evening on the twilight trolley tour. It was raining lightly and we had limited time. Actually this monument deserves more time to enjoy and reflect. There is so much to it...with its various "rooms" and aspects of the man and his presidency. The bronze sculptures are insightful as well as beautifully executed. Leave a Comment

This memorial is more like a park with 4 rooms, waterfalls, and a visitor center. 1st room commemorates his first term. 2nd room displays a sculpture of figures in the breadline representing the Great Depression during his terms. 3rd room displays disabled president and his dog Fala. 4th room honors his 4th term. According to the placard nearby, FDR had asked a friend to make certain his memorial met certain requirements ... and this simple marble block was the result. US presidents are aware of the need for us mere mortals to erect monuments to our famous dead ...... and FDR wanted to make sure his memorial was in keeping with his wishes. So here it is, the simple memorial to a great man ...... The larger memorial on the Potomac was not in keeping with this wishes, but does depect his wife and his dog ... so someone else wasn't listening ...... Leave a Comment

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial pays tribute to our 32nd President. FDR was most famous for leading the World through World War II, but he also brought America through the great depression with innovative, liberal ideas such as the New Deal and the Civilian Conservation Corps. FDR was a fifth cousin to environmentalist, war hero, and prior President Theodore Roosevelt. The FDR Memorial was recently completed in 1997 and is somewhat off-the-beaten-path in regards to other memorials in Washington DC. It covers a very large area along the edge of the Tidal Basin south of the Mall and the sections of the monument are dedicated to the key quotes and events of each of his four terms as President. With tranquil pools, roaring fountains and falls, and many benches and green trees you could easily spend one hour here. This Memorial provided a respite to us from touristy Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials that we went to earlier. We walked through this 7.5 acres site taking our time at each of its four outdoor gallery rooms that depict 12 years of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's presidency. There are 10 bronze sculptures portraying President Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt and events from the Great Depression and World War II. The galleries are landscaped in a park like setting with waterfalls and quiet pools, amidst a wall of reddish Dakota granite on which Roosevelt's inspiring words are carved. We found out that this is the 1st memorial in Washington purposely designed to be totally wheelchair accessible. He believed and wanted us Americans to have, cherish, and live the four freedoms. " Freedom of Speech", "Freedom of Worship", Freedom from Want", and Freedom from Fear". Room two represent FDR's second term 1937-41. We were still struggling with the depression, although FDR put into place United States Housing Authority (1937), a second Agricultural Adjustment Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938, which helped establish minimum wage and help create 3.3 million WPA jobs by 1938. The inscribtion across the top of the wall reads: "SEE ONE-THIRD OF OUR NATION – ILL CLAD – ILL HOUSED – ILL NOURISHED~ FDR" This sculpture illustrates how much our nation was burden during the tough times during the depression. Farmers and sharecroppers alike loosing their lively hood to the dust bowl and losing their jobs to the crash of the stockmarkets. Fathers, sons, and brothers standing in the soup lines to find a something to eat since what little food was left for their families. The main part of the memorial remains open 24 hours a day. He believed and wanted us Americans to have, cherish, and live the four freedoms. " Freedom of Speech", "Freedom of Worship", Freedom from Want", and Freedom from Fear". This sculpture illustrates how they tried to hide FDR's disability with a huge cape to hide his wheel chair and also their is a scuplture of his favorite little dog, Fala! This quote reads: "They who seek to establish systems of government based on the regimentation of all human beings by a handful of individual rulers….call this a new order. It is not new and it is not order. ~ President FDR" The main part of the memorial remains open 24 hours a day.
